Reddit Becomes The Most Popular Website For Product Reviews In 2023

In the digital world, brace yourself for a game-changing experience as the online platform for product reviews takes a revolutionary turn.

Reddit has emerged as a game-changer in the online product review world after Google’s latest updates sent shockwaves.

In Glen Allsopp’s recent analysis of 10,000 search results, he made an intriguing discovery regarding the search engine rankings of product review affiliates.

Google’s recent updates have caused a major disruption in the rankings, resulting in one of the most significant upheavals we have ever seen. In the midst of this chaotic digital landscape, Reddit emerged as a shining beacon.

Reddit has undeniably established itself as the unrivaled hub for product reviews on the English-speaking internet. It not only reigns supreme but also surpasses all competitors by a significant margin.

Reddit has achieved an unprecedented level of dominance by securing a place in the top ten search results for an astounding 6,699 search terms. This is almost twice the number of results achieved by the second-place contender, The New York Times, which ranked in 3,680 search results. It’s a staggering revelation that highlights Reddit’s impressive search engine performance.

Reddit is proficient in handling common search terms such as ‘best wireless keyboard,’ ‘best budget laptop,’ ‘best cordless drill,’ ‘best moisturizer for sensitive skin,’ and many others. Let’s continue exploring beyond these examples.

Reddit’s search ranking has undergone a remarkable transformation, climbing from 235th in January to 160th in July, and finally claiming the top spot in October.

It’s important to note that Reddit’s first-page presence in 6,699 search results is just a portion of the overall picture. Only 17 of those instances resulted in Reddit achieving the highly sought-after number-one ranking. To put this into perspective, The New York Times held 955 first-place rankings, Forbes had 355, and Good Housekeeping claimed 361.

I analyzed all 10,000 search results twice and exported their rankings in Semrush, revealing that despite its ubiquity, Reddit rarely secures the top spots.

Let’s explore further into eight additional insights.;

  1. Forbes Breaks Records: Forbes appeared in more search results than ever recorded and secured 29% more first-place rankings.
  2. Amazon’s Rise: Amazon more than doubled its first-place rankings, leaping from 95 in January to 195 in October.
  3. Wired’s Surge: Condé Nast’s Wired was present in 14.6% more search results than in July and 27% more than in January.
  4. The Newcomers: We observed more new domains ranking than ever before. A staggering 2,947 domains from October’s analysis (out of 8,866) didn’t rank at all in July.
  5. The 1.1% Rule: The top 100 domains, ranked by their appearance in search results, snagged 7,304 first-place rankings. That’s merely 1.1% of the sites but a whopping 73% of the first-place rankings.
  6. Corporate Dominance: Only four out of the top 100 domains can be classified as independent content sites. The rest are e-commerce sites, owned by public companies, or part of large media brands.
  7. Forums’ Growing Presence: Forums have made quite the entrance, with one automotive forum now ranking 96th, a far cry from being outside the top 500 domains before.
  8. The Test of Time: Just ten of the top 500 sites are on domains registered within the last five years. Most of the top-ranking sites have a longstanding digital presence.

The top 20 domains that appeared most frequently in the 10,000 search results for product reviews are as follows:
