Biomods are a key way to upgrade your Pioneer in Subnautica 2, making it easier to survive and succeed in the environment. You can get them at the Bio Lab Station found at the Welcome Center or build one at your own base.
There are two types of Biomods: Active and Passive. Active Biomods need you to trigger them manually, while Passive Biomods work automatically without any action. When you start the game, you get access to two of each type, and you can pick one from each. To unlock more Biomods, you’ll need to scan different sea creatures.
All Biomods and their unlock methods include:
- Dash: Allows you to dodge predators or hazards in any direction. No scan needed; it’s available from the start.
- Pathfinder: Leaves a trail of scents you can follow to find your way. No scan needed; it’s available from the start.
- Sonic Echo: Sends out a sonar pulse to locate resources nearby. You must scan the Collector Leviathan, found east of the lifepod at about 90 meters deep, to unlock this.
- Electric Discharge: Emits an 800-volt shock to scare away medium and large predators. You need to scan Electric Geordie, located near the power plant guarded by the massive Collector Leviathan.
- Chum Cloud: Creates a bait cloud to distract enemies. To unlock, scan Toxic Sponge, found in caves east of the lifepod at 12 meters deep, and Houndgar, near the Tadpole Pens east of the lifepod at 150 meters deep.
- Camouflage: Lets you turn invisible when still. Locate Bullethead off to the east-northeast at 210 meters deep to scan.
- Homing Sense: Detects nearby bases with power. Scan Surge Jelly and Hammerhead sharks, which patrol the area around the power plant, about 1800 meters east of the lifepod.
- Threat Sense: Warns you of nearby dangers. It requires scanning Hoverthorn, swimming around the north-northeast at 120 meters deep in the area where you find the Angel Comb.
- Dermal Garden: Slowly grows nutritious algae on your skin. To scan, find a Needler Mango on a large rock structure east of the lifepod at about 200 meters depth.
- Water Retention: Improves water collection by enlarging your kidneys. Scan the Coral Crab near the lifepod at about 30 meters deep, where it hides in sea grass.
- Water Secretion: Filters freshwater from seawater to fill water packets. Scan the Water Slug near the lifepod at about 15 meters deep in orange sea grass.
Only one Biomod of each type can be equipped at a time, but you can change them anytime at a Bio Lab Station. To unlock new Biomods, you’ll need to find and scan the related creatures using a Bioscanner, which requires constructing a Modification Station and a Bioscanner at your base. Remember, some scans may cause you to die immediately, so it’s best to clear your inventory of essentials beforehand. Your scan progress stays saved in the data log as long as you complete the scan before dying.
