A 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Monday, according to the US Geological Survey. The tremor occurred at a depth of 17.4 miles (28 km), with its epicenter located approximately 14 miles (22.5 km) from the town of Khulm, which has a population nearing 65,000.
Afghanistan’s national disaster management agency has stated that updates on casualties and damages will be shared later. At this time, Reuters has not independently confirmed the extent of the destruction caused by the quake.
In August, more than 1,000 fatalities resulted from an earthquake that struck Afghanistan, as reported by the Afghan Red Crescent Society, a humanitarian organization operating in the area.
