A devastating gas explosion and fire occurred at an apartment complex in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas. Rescue efforts are now transitioning into a recovery phase. Authorities report that three people have lost their lives — two women and a child.
Dallas Fire Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans shared that three individuals were hospitalized, with one in critical but stable condition. The other two received medical treatment and are expected to be discharged by tonight.
In addition, two other individuals with minor injuries arrived at the hospital independently and are outside of danger.
Deputy Fire Chief Mark DeBerry informed the media that the rescue operation is ongoing and could extend for another two to four hours or even longer. He emphasized that the building is being thoroughly searched during debris removal to ensure all victims and evidence are accounted for.
Evans added that crews will be working through the night, inspecting every part of the structure meticulously. Assistant Fire Chief James Russ confirmed that the fire has been controlled, but firefighters remain on scene conducting an initial search operation.
Atmos Energy, the natural gas provider, stated that the fire department was alerted at 12:51 p.m. after a construction crew not affiliated with the company damaged an underground gas line near 409 East Ninth Street, leading to a leak and subsequent explosion. The company said it is working with emergency responders and has immediately shut off the gas supply to the affected area.
Mayor Eric L. Johnson expressed deep sorrow over the incident, urging residents to pray for the families impacted as well as the rescue workers. “I call on the entire city, the state, and the country to pray for those affected by this tragedy. Let’s also keep in our thoughts the Dallas Fire Rescue personnel still on scene, tirelessly engaged in firefighting and rescue efforts,” he stated.
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident while continuing debris removal and victim searches. Several individuals remain missing, and rescue crews are still actively managing the fire and conducting searches.
