On May 18, 2026, a report of an active shooter at the Islamic Center in San Diego’s Clairemont area prompted a heavy police reaction, as captured in footage shared by NBC. Multiple patrol units surrounded the site, with officers aiming rifles at the building. The police entered the complex amidst ongoing security efforts.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria confirmed the situation on social media, stating, “I am aware of the active shooter at the Islamic Center in Clairemont and am receiving updates from law enforcement. Emergency teams are on scene working to safeguard the community and secure the area.”
The local police department also confirmed their officers were present at the scene of the reported active shooter. The Islamic Center, the largest mosque in San Diego County, is situated in a primarily residential and commercial district.
Images from the scene show numerous police vehicles on a nearby highway bridge, with personnel pulling into the complex and aiming their weapons at the building.
