However, recent issues with Meta’s latest update—version 72—are causing problems for some users of the Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S. For many, these devices have become little more than pricey decorations, but Meta has indicated that a resolution is forthcoming.
Users have reported difficulty installing the v72 update, and when it does go through, they’re greeted with a disheartening black screen that states, “Your device is corrupt. It can’t be trusted.” Meta advises holding the power button for 45 seconds before restarting the device. Theoretically, this should reset the headset and rectify major issues, but a significant number of users have pointed out that this solution has not worked for them, as noted by Android Central.
Discussions surrounding this issue are widespread on Meta’s forums, and the company has officially stated: “We are currently experiencing a software update issue and are working to resolve it as soon as possible.”
The root cause of the problems is still up for debate, but it appears that older headsets that have lain dormant for a while are most susceptible to the bugs. Users transitioning from version 70 to 72 do not seem to face as many pitfalls, but those updating from notably earlier firmware versions report experiencing more crashes. Additionally, issues appear to manifest more frequently on the Meta Quest 2 compared to newer models.
Despite Meta’s assurance that they are addressing the situation, numerous users have found their headsets rendered completely inoperable following the update. For those whose devices are out of warranty, purchasing a refurbished headset for around $150 stands as the most cost-effective interim solution until a reliable fix is provided.
