The Kremlin stated on Wednesday that neither China nor Russia has conducted clandestine nuclear tests. Beijing has denied US allegations that it tested nuclear weapons in secret. The United States recently accused China of performing a secret nuclear test in 2020 and called for a new, comprehensive arms control treaty that includes both China and Russia. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized, “We’ve heard numerous references to specific tests. Russia and China have both been mentioned, but neither country has carried out any nuclear tests.” He also highlighted that China’s representatives have categorically denied these accusations.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is urging China to join the US and Russia in negotiations to replace the expired New START treaty, which was the last US-Russian nuclear arms agreement, ending on February 5. The treaty’s expiration has raised concerns among some experts about the potential acceleration of a nuclear arms race, though others believe such fears are overstated.
