China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced plans to intensify efforts in advancing cutting-edge technologies, including sixth-generation mobile communications and the next-generation internet. The ministry aims to foster stronger collaboration and innovation between the information sector and various industries.
Efforts will include expanding comprehensive coverage of 5G and high-speed fiber networks while continuing initiatives to enhance signal reliability. The rollout of 5G-Advanced, an upgraded version of 5G, will be accelerated for large-scale commercial deployment. Pilot programs for ultra-fast 10-gigabit optical networks will be launched, alongside upgrades to the existing Dual Gigabit Network—integrating 5G and gigabit fiber—transforming it into a Dual 10G Network. Additionally, efforts to develop the mobile Internet of Things will proceed rapidly, aiming for a fully interconnected environment, often described as “Intelligence of Everything.”
As of March 31, China had approximately 4.95 million 5G base stations and 32 million ports capable of gigabit internet access via 10G PON technology. Pilot projects for ultra-fast 10-gigabit optical networks have been implemented in 168 residential complexes, factories, and industrial parks across 86 cities. Meanwhile, 5G-Advanced service is available in 330 cities. The sector supporting the mobile Internet of Things is expanding swiftly, with 2.94 billion connected devices active so far.
The ministry also emphasized support for future-oriented research into space-based computing technologies and promoting the growth of the industry. Efforts will include constructing demand-based computing infrastructure, coordinating green energy with computing resources, advancing automated monitoring of national computing power, and improving the China Computational Power Platform. These initiatives aim to better align supply and demand for computing resources and enhance overall operational efficiency.
In economic news, the value added by industrial companies in China with annual revenues of at least CNY 20 million (around USD 2.9 million) increased by 6.1% in the first quarter compared to the previous year. Every province experienced growth, and over 80% of industries saw expansion. The industrial sector now accounts for nearly 40% of the country’s economic growth.
