Staff Combat Tips
While the endless Heavy Attack combos are entertaining, it’s best not to rely on them too much. Instead, wait for the perfect moment to strike. The moving combos are effective for slicing through hordes of enemies, but the stationary combo should be reserved for specific scenarios, like following up a parry or utilizing a Special Art.
When you successfully counter an enemy with a well-timed parry or a Special Art to interrupt a strong attack, they’ll become briefly staggered. Quickly move next to them and initiate a stationary combo to land multiple hits before they recover. This strategy will deal significant damage and usually reduce an extra shield’s worth of their Fortitude.
If it’s the final shield, hold the button until just before your Assault opportunity runs out to maximize damage.
The staff also offers numerous Battle Arts that can launch enemies. Make the most of its aerial multi-attack combos and glide to defeat opponents while they’re vulnerable in the air.
Best Staff Build
Creating a build that focuses on the staff’s aerial combo capabilities allows you to take full advantage of its distinct features.
Recommended Gem
The Vortex Gem significantly boosts damage against airborne enemies, making it an ideal choice for staff builds. If it’s not adequately leveled, you should collect some Pyroxene and Moongrass to enhance it.
Meanwhile, several high-tier versions of the staff come with traits that extend the input window for parries. Thus, the Scorch Gem serves as a valuable secondary option, increasing your overall damage during parry combos.
Recommended Battle Arts
You can purchase Vaulting Leap from shops starting in Chapter 3. This ability costs just one Bravery and launches enemies into the air, allowing for easy air combo follow-ups. Once you reach Proficiency 6, you can follow up with Soaring Sky Dance or even start with that move to bring multiple foes into the air.
While you’re working towards unlocking those Battle Arts, keep Chaotic Flurry equipped when available at Proficiency 4. This short-term rush attack functions similarly to the Running Combo, and its status as a Special Art enables it to interrupt critical enemy attacks. Its agility can disrupt enemy formations if used wisely!
You can even execute Chaotic Flurry from the air, making it effective against certain jumping attacks.
Since Chaotic Flurry requires three Bravery, it’s advisable to have the reliable Palm Strike equipped as a backup. With this setup, you pose a threat both on the ground and in the air, keeping your enemies on their toes!
