Karlach is a melee-focused companion in Baldur’s Gate 3, known for her fiery rage and her infernal engine lodged in her chest. With a solid build, she can clear out groups of enemies effortlessly, often dealing more damage than many spellcasters when optimized properly.
Today, we’ll explore two strong builds that turn Karlach into the ultimate barbarian. Both are straightforward to develop, enjoyable to play, and capable of causing huge damage with the right gear. You can unleash a rapid barrage of melee strikes or craft items around Karlach into deadly weapons.
Updated November 18, 2025: We’ve improved the ranged version of this guide by adding some stealth elements and increasing her throwing capabilities.
Karlach Overview
- Race: Zariel Tiefling
- Starting Class: Barbarian
- Background: Outlander
- Proficiencies: Athletics, Intimidation, Perception, Survival
Her high Strength makes her perfect for wielding heavy two-handed weapons or tossing environmental objects as improvised weapons, which suits her rage-filled nature. To make her effective at ranged combat, feats like Tavern Brawler can scale her improvised damage, though she’s primarily built for cleaving enemies apart with a giant sword. Support her with spells like Haste, and she’ll become a force to be reckoned with.
Best Melee Build for Karlach
This setup uses an 8/4 multiclass split between Barbarian and Fighter, blending the best of both. Level her mainly as a Barbarian through Act 1, then dip into Fighter during Act 2 to unlock Action Surge, which grants an extra attack per turn once per short rest. With this, she can attack up to four times in a round, or six times when buffed with Haste.
Maximize damage by boosting Strength and taking the Great Weapon Master feat, adding +10 damage to each attack. Coupled with a strong two-handed weapon, Karlach can dominate enemies turn after turn throughout the game. This build is easy to play, delivers impressive damage, and scales smoothly.
Leveling Strategy
- Focus on reaching level 5 in Act 1.
- Gain Reckless Attack at level 2 (for advantage on attacks).
- Pick the Wildheart subclass at level 3, choosing between Bear (damage reduction) or Eagle (dive attack and bonus Dash).
- At level 4, take an Ability Score Improvement (ASI) and select the Great Weapon Master feat.
- Level 5 grants an extra attack and Fast Movement.
- Add Fighter levels for Action Surge and Fighting Style, then pick between Battle Master (disarm, frighten) or Champion (crit chance).
- Respec her stats later using the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength for even higher damage output.
Key Talents: Max Strength, Great Weapon Master, and a potent melee weapon.
How to Grow the Build
- Prioritize reaching level 5 early; Reckless Attack at level 2.
- Choose the Wildheart barbarian subclass to enhance Rage with Bear or Eagle.
- Level 4 grants an ASI—get Great Weapon Master for maximum damage.
- Extra attack at level 5 makes her deadly.
- Use spells like Haste to multiply attacks; Haste allows up to six attacks per turn.
Recommended Equipment
- Early: a +1 two-handed weapon (like Balduran’s Giantslayer) enhances damage.
- Endgame: Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength set her Strength to 23, boosting damage and attack rolls.
- Other gear: items increasing damage, improving AC, or boosting saving throws, such as the Adamantine Scale Mail for critical hit immunity and rings that enhance strength or damage.
Ranged Melee Hybrid Build
While Barbarians aren’t known for ranged attacks, this build makes her a formidable threat from afar. Using the Tavern Brawler feat, she can turn anything into a damage-dealing weapon, even throwing enemies or environmental objects. Pair with the Berserker subclass to maximize thrown damage, and throw enemies off cliffs or hurl objects mid-combat.
Max damage is achieved by multiclassing into Rogue (Thief subclass) for Fast Hands, allowing two Frenzied Throws per turn. Combining this with Barbarian’s Extra Attack and Action Surge, she can unleash massive damage at range.
Leveling Approach
- Focus on levels 4 in Barbarian, then multiclass into Rogue (4 levels) and Fighter (3 levels).
- Take Tavern Brawler at level 4 for doubled Throw damage.
- Gain Cunning Action at Rogue level 2 for quick repositioning.
- Use Rogue’s Quick Hands to throw/attack more often.
- At Fighter levels, get Action Surge and Fighting Style.
Key Tactics: Use environment and thrown weapons for high damage. Keep supplies of javelins and thrown weapons like Nyrulna (a thunder-javelin that returns).
Equipment Tips for Ranged Build
- Early: stockpile Javelins and Storm Throw (Returning Pike).
- Late game: use Disintegrating Night Walkers boots for mobility and Misty Step.
- Main weapon: Nyrulna or similar returning javelins, paired with items increasing thrown damage.
Ranged Build Highlights
- Great early damage by throwing weapons.
- Can use enemies as improvised weapons for extra damage.
- Fun and simple to level.
- Requires a stash of weapons but offers high offense and mobility.
Both builds rely on a strong melee foundation but can be adapted for ranged combat if preferred. The key is maximizing damage output, supporting her with spells and gear, and adjusting her stats and feats for your playstyle.
