Sony has stated that they haven’t yet decided on a release date or pricing for the next-generation console, which will eventually be the PS6. During their Q4 fiscal year 2025 earnings call, CEO Hiroki Totoki mentioned in response to questions about how rising component costs might affect the console that no concrete plans have been set. He explained, “We haven’t determined the timing of the new console’s launch or its price yet. We need to observe and monitor the situation closely.”
Due to anticipated limited supply in fiscal year 2027, Sony expects memory prices to stay high and is considering new strategies for selling the PS6. Totoki added, “We want to explore various scenarios, including potential changes to our business models, to identify the best approach and strategy.”
According to external sources, Sony is aiming to launch the PS6 around 2027, possibly alongside a handheld device. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s upcoming next-gen console, known tentatively as Project Helix, is also rumored for release next year.
However, the current PlayStation community doesn’t seem ready for a new console just yet. A recent Push Square poll involving over 4,000 voters showed that most PS5 owners believe a PS6 should launch in either 2028 or 2029. Only about 11% think Sony’s targeted 2027 release is appropriate.
Regarding the PS6’s price, concerns about a $1,000 console have circulated, but some sources suggest it could be more affordable than expected. Industry leaker KeplerL2 indicated the price might be closer to what a PS5 Pro costs today, though likely still in the higher range.
While Sony has shared some public insights, internal discussions are ongoing to shape a clear roadmap, including potential release windows and pricing strategies. These plans are still evolving, but Sony is likely to have a more defined plan in the near future.
