One of the most highly anticipated PS5 RPGs has received significant updates. Dragon Quest XII, the upcoming installment in the legendary RPG series, now has new details. This includes a new title, a spin-off announcement, and notable changes to the main game.
Square Enix recently hosted a livestream to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic Dragon Quest series. During the event, the company revealed that the new name for the game would be Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. Previously, it was known as Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. According to executive producer Yosuke Saito, the development process has undergone a complete overhaul.
Although the original vision aimed for a darker tone, the revised version appears to be much more in line with previous Dragon Quest games. Saito explained that during the development of The Flames of Fate, it became clear that starting over was necessary.
“We’re working hard on XII, but because of a team reshuffle and a fresh start on development, it will be a bit longer before the game is ready,” Saito said. “Work on the original version hit several roadblocks. However, after discussing with Mr. Horii and clarifying what a mainline Dragon Quest game should feel like, we decided to rework everything from the ground up. It was a major decision, but I believe it’s the right call to deliver a game that all you fans will truly enjoy. As part of this new approach, we’ve also updated the game’s logo and subtitle.”
New gameplay footage reveals a much more vibrant, expansive adventure. Fans are introduced to the protagonist, a spiky-haired warrior armed with a sword and shield, before being taken through gameplay spanning various biomes. Due to these changes, no release date has been announced for Dragon Quest XII.
In addition to the main game updates, Square Enix unveiled Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, a spin-off set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 1 & 2, and PC. This game features dual protagonists Bianca and Nera from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, though it also lacks a release date at this time.
