A major PS5 sci-fi game is launching this week, and ahead of its release, it has received a wave of glowing reviews.
Supermassive Games’ upcoming sci-fi title, Directive 8020, features Lashana Lynch as an astronaut fighting to survive against a shape-shifting alien menace. The game is scheduled to be released tomorrow, May 12, 2026. Before its debut, it appeared on OpenCritic with a score of 76, and 62% of critics recommended it. Despite the relatively mixed numerical rating, Directive 8020 has been widely praised for its immersive setting, tense atmosphere, and compelling storyline.
IGN’s Leana Hafer described the game as “a significant step forward for The Dark Pictures Anthology in terms of both spectacle and storytelling, making for a chilling and impressive kickoff to the series’ second season.” PC Gamer’s Elie Gould added that the game embodies everything fans want from a sci-fi horror experience: alien body horror, the overwhelming sense of insignificance in the vast universe, and entertaining quick-time events.
DualShockers’ Christian Bognar also expressed admiration, stating that it’s “a solid addition to the Dark Pictures series and a strong start to its second season. Its story ranks among Supermassive Games’ best work and marks a notable progression after the studio’s recent struggles to deliver standout titles.”
PlayStation Lifestyle’s Tyler Treese praised the game as well, noting it “offers a refreshing change from Supermassive’s previous releases. With improved gameplay mechanics and a few genuinely chilling moments, the extra development time has clearly paid off.”
