As you progress in Windrose, you reach a point where being cautious isn’t enough—you become suspicious of every uneven patch of ground. That’s usually when your new best friend, the Shovel, comes into play.
It’s not a tool the game hands to you right away. You have to earn it by gathering materials, refining Copper, and convincing yourself that you actually need three ingots for what is just a Shovel. But once you finally have it, everything changes in how you explore and interact with the world.
How to Get a Shovel
First, you need to collect Copper, which unlocks the recipe for making a Shovel. We also have a detailed guide on where to find and mine Copper.
You will need to gather three Copper Ingots before the Shovel recipe appears at the workbench. Having only one or two won’t cut it—you’ll need to mine and refine enough Copper to reach the full amount.
In addition to Copper, you’ll need Wood, which you can get by chopping down trees with an Axe. You craft the Axe using Wood and Stone at the Workbench, so there’s a small step of progression before you can start mining for Copper.
Once you have the materials, you need three Copper Ingots and ten Wood at the Workbench to craft the Shovel.
How to Use a Shovel
After crafting it, the Shovel becomes a very useful tool that goes beyond simple digging.
- It can be used to unearth buried treasures.
- It also functions as a melee weapon for combat.
- Plus, it allows you to reshape the environment itself, such as flattening uneven ground or raising sections of land.
To switch between these modes, you equip the Shovel and use the Z and X keys to cycle through the options.
