Mina the Hollower faces several bosses, but some must be fought as they serve as protectors of the Spark Generators. One of these is The Duchess, a giant stone statue guarding the Queensbury Crypt’s generator. Here’s how to defeat it.
How to Beat The Duchess
At first, The Duchess isn’t too hard. It has a wide attack swing that covers a lot of ground, so keep an eye out for the wind-up and quickly move to safety. The boss jumps around a lot, trying to press buttons on the ground that shoot arrows into the arena.
These arrows don’t hurt The Duchess, but they do break when they hit something. You can use this to your advantage by positioning yourself on her side to block the arrows, turning her into a sort of shield and removing the threat.
Taking down her health bar is straightforward if you remember these points. Maintain your distance, watch for her attack wind-up, and avoid getting greedy. When her health drops to zero, things get tougher. The Duchess will enter a second phase, which is much more dangerous.
How to Beat The Duchess (Second Phase)
After a short pause, The Duchess will remove its head, revealing a mass of tentacles controlling the statue. The head bounces along the floor, pressing buttons that trigger new dangers you can’t easily avoid.
In this phase, her attacks change. She performs quicker swings, followed by lunges toward you. She also shouts and wiggles her tentacles out of her armor, then slams them into the ground to burst out of the floor toward you three to six times.
Most of her attacks are horizontal, with only the initial lunge being vertical. This means the safest spots are above and below her. Throughout the fight, arrows will keep spawning unless the head stays stuck in a corner, jumping around.
To win, stay mobile, constantly burrow to dodge arrows, and use your ranged Side Arms when you can’t approach safely. There’s a broken tombstone in the top left corner outside The Duchess’s room that offers alternative Side Arms options if you don’t have a suitable one.
Remember these tips: stay on the move, use your environment, and make good use of your ranged attacks. If you’re still struggling, leveling up in other areas or activating assist options can help. Beating The Duchess earns you Bones, a health upgrade, and if you’re escorting The Duke, you can also get the best Trinket in the game by sealing him up.
