God of War: Sons of Sparta has been released, allowing players to experience a young Kratos during his soldier training days. Set years before the original game, this 2D side-scroller features exploration of a dangerous world filled with mythical monsters you must defeat.
One of the toughest enemies you’ll encounter is Alastor, a boss needed to advance the main story. This challenging fight becomes available after you find all four fountains in Oneus Vineyard. Here’s what you need to know to defeat him:
How to Defeat Alastor
Phase One
Alastor can be tricky because he uses large, screen-wide attacks that can deal heavy damage. When the fight begins, focus on destroying the two orbs on each side of the arena before attacking Alastor. These orbs keep firing projectiles at you if left untouched, so eliminate them quickly. Once destroyed, you can then concentrate on dodging Alastor’s moves.
Early in the fight, Alastor performs several moves, which are mostly easy to dodge:
- He releases multiple circular explosions across the upper part of the arena. Stay below the blasts to avoid damage.
- He flies to either corner of the arena and shoots a wave of blood in a wide fan pattern. Rolling through this attack is recommended because you can get under him to perform jump attacks once he completes the move.
- He also attempts to lash out with his whip in an unblockable attack. When he stops moving, roll through him, then attack from behind during the brief opening.
When Alastor’s health drops to around 60%, he will release some magic and healing orbs before moving into the second phase.
Phase Two
This phase starts with Alastor moving to the center and launching spiraling projectiles. To avoid damage, immediately step to the side of the arena and raise your shield. He then follows with more projectiles in triangle patterns—blocking these is possible but recovers some health; moving a few inches away from the corner can help you avoid some hits altogether.
Once he finishes that attack, two new red orbs will spawn in opposite corners. Destroy these quickly with a few hits — a charged spear attack works well if you’ve unlocked it. Failing to do so can make the fight harder.
Next, Alastor summons blood fists that fly either vertically or horizontally across the screen. These fists rotate between directions, and each can deal serious damage. To avoid them:
- Move left or right to dodge vertical fists.
- Roll through horizontal fists to evade them while setting up counterattacks.
Be cautious because these fists can come at different heights, making movement tricky with multiple platforms.
Additionally, he will launch circular explosions near the bottom of the arena twice in a row. Use the sides to avoid them or crouch between safe spots.
Later in the phase, Alastor will cause the blood projectiles he shoots from the corners to double back toward him. Roll through both waves to avoid damage, and if positioned underneath him, attack during his attack animation.
The best opportunities to deal damage are during his fan and unblockable whip attacks, when he’s vulnerable.
When his health hits about 33%, he transitions into phase three.
Phase Three
The final stage begins similarly, with Alastor firing projectiles in spirals and triangular patterns. Evade these as before, then turn around to focus on destroying the four orbs that spawn. Prioritize eliminating the orbs quickly to prevent overwhelming projectile spam. Use powerful attacks like Kratos’ charged spear if available to speed things up.
Alastor also moves to the middle of the arena periodically, performing a spiral projectile attack. When he does, immediately retreat to a corner to avoid damage. Throughout this phase, keep attacking during his unblockable and blood fan moves, as he remains vulnerable during these moments.
Patience is key. Focus on dodging and avoiding getting greedy with attacks, especially during his blood fist assaults. Remember to roll through horizontal blood fists to stay safe.
Defeating Alastor relies on carefully timing your dodges and attacks, making the fight a test of patience and precision.
