Square Enix announced today that one of the most acclaimed RPGs for PlayStation 4 is making a return, with a sequel heading to PS5.
During a celebration of hitting 10 million copies sold worldwide, Square Enix revealed that the universe of Nier Automata will continue. The announcement appeared briefly at the end of the company’s celebratory video, which marked a significant milestone for the game, recognized as the top Game of the Year by PlayStation Lifestyle in 2017.
Fans quickly started speculating about a possible sequel to the popular title. However, details remain vague. Nier Automata was originally released nearly a decade ago and follows the story of combat android 2B, scanner android 9S, and the rogue prototype A2. The game was highly praised for blending multiple genres, including RPG mechanics, hack-and-slash combat, shoot ’em up sequences, and text adventure segments.
While there’s no official confirmation, the teaser has sparked numerous theories about what the continuation might entail. Geoff Keighley also added to the speculation by sharing an ambiguous image from the end of the video on his X account. Rumors suggest that many of the developers involved with Nier Automata are working on a new project, but details on what that could be or when it will be released remain under wraps.
