Discovering Nirnroot: A Guide to Seeking Your Roots

The original Oblivion has always been recognized for its impressive quest design, and now The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered captures that brilliance with its blend of innovative game engines. As a result, many quests are even more engaging thanks to enhanced graphics, facial animations, and voice acting. However, this also means that some of the more tedious quests remain unchanged. One such quest, “Seeking Your Roots,” may not be the most thrilling in Oblivion Remastered, but it offers valuable rewards for players.

To kick off the “Seeking Your Roots” questline, you won’t need to do much at all. Simply collect any single Nirnroot found in the wild. While this is one of the first quests you’ll encounter in Oblivion Remastered, completing the full questline is more challenging than it seems, as you need to gather a total of 100 Nirnroots. Though these plants are commonly found, the trick is that once harvested, wild Nirnroots usually don’t respawn.

How to Spot Nirnroot in Oblivion Remastered

Listen Closely to Locate This Rare Plant

Fortunately, despite the rarity and value of the Nirnroot plant, it’s relatively easy to identify in the wilds of Tamriel if you know what to look for. Nirnroot stands out with its bright, vibrant appearance compared to its surroundings, and in Oblivion Remastered, its distinctive branching leaves make it even more noticeable.

To improve your chances of finding Nirnroot, raise the sound effects volume and listen for its unique chime.

Since Nirnroot isn’t restricted to just where land meets water, your best bet is to turn up the sound effects volume in Oblivion Remastered and pay attention for its characteristic chime. Typically, Nirnroot can be found along coastlines, though their distance from the shore can vary. Make sure to quicksave regularly while hunting for Nirnroot, as this could save you a lot of time if you run into unexpected dangers or experience a crash, especially without an unofficial patch installed.

Top Locations to Find Nirnroot in Oblivion Remastered

Gathering All 100 Nirnroot Efficiently

One major advantage of Oblivion Remastered‘s map being smaller than that of Skyrim is that exploring the world is much quicker. This makes the quest “Seeking Your Roots” significantly easier if you ride a horse and know where to search. While Sinderion suggests starting at the Nirnroot located north of Skingrad, it won’t be enough to reach the 100 you need for the quest, which is more manageable when following a single route.

You’ll have the most success starting near the Imperial City and following a loop along the southern coastline, turning around at Leyawiin.

Considering the environments where Nirnroot flourishes, your best strategy is to begin around the Imperial City and make a complete loop down the coast to Leyawiin. With patience and an ear out for those Nirnroot chimes, you should be able to gather enough to finish the quest. However, if you’re still missing some, there are numerous Nirnroots scattered throughout the game world, particularly around the Anvil coast, presenting a good opportunity to gather the rest.

Given the limited nature of Nirnroot, it’s unlikely that you’ll use or sell them before you finish the quest. Fortunately, there’s a somewhat dependable spot to find Nirnroot. After you unlock the Deepscorn Hollow house just south of Leyawiin, there’s guaranteed to be one on the table in the bedroom, which will respawn every three days after collection.

With a total of 309 Nirnroot available in Oblivion Remastered, you probably won’t need to resort to this slower method, but it’s a useful way to gather Nirnroot passively without actively farming.

Once you’ve collected all 100 Nirnroot, you can start enjoying the perks of having a good reputation with Skingrad’s alchemist, which will result in much better returns for your materials and a significant discount on potions. Regardless of how challenging the Seeking Your Roots quest may be, it marks the beginning of a potentially exciting era for Bethesda in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. These collection quests are definitely worth pursuing in the future.
