As you journey through the expansive landscape of Cyrodiil in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, you’ll stumble upon numerous mysteries and intrigues that can alter your perception of Tamriel. Not every non-playable character (NPC) is innocent, and some creatures might not be as menacing as they seem. Take Raynil Dralas, for instance; he presents himself as a vampire hunter but harbors a sinister secret of his own.
Your task is to delve into a murder case in Bruma and unravel a brotherhood torn apart by greed. Here’s what you need to know to uncover the truth and earn a unique leveled reward for your efforts.
How to Begin the Brotherhood Betrayed Quest
Upon entering Bruma, you might catch wind of rumors about a vampire hunter hanging around. Alternatively, you can initiate this quest by simply visiting Bradon Lirrian’s home on the town’s western side.
Inside, you’ll want to talk to Carius Runellius, the guard overseeing the investigation. You’ll need to improve his attitude towards you before he’ll allow you to assist in the search for clues. Unfortunately, the evidence against the late Bradon doesn’t look promising; it seems he was a vampire, killed by the infamous Raynil Dralas.
Don’t disturb the body! Doing so will result in a bounty.
Next, speak with Bradon’s widow, Erline Larrian. She is adamant that her husband was not a vampire but simply worked night shifts and was unjustly killed. Furthermore, she believes she has seen Raynil Dralas before but can’t quite place where.
Finding Evidence Against Raynil Dralas
Erline asks you to help clear her husband’s name, so make your way to Olav’s Tavern in Bruma. Ask Olav about Raynil Dralas, and if he likes you enough, he’ll give you the key to the last room at the end of the hall. If not, you can pickpocket the key to gain access.
Inside the room, check behind the dresser for a journal. This is Gelebourne’s Journal, which reveals that he, Bradon, and Raynil were once treasure hunters. They secured an artifact in a cave that can only be accessed with all three keys—each man possessing one.
Take the journal back to Carius to prove Bradon’s innocence. He’ll gather the guard and request an hour to track down Raynil Dralas. Meet him at Olav’s Tap and Tackle to find out Raynil’s whereabouts.
Your time starts now! You have 24 hours to retrieve the artifact before Raynil Dralas escapes Cyrodiil.
Recovering the Artifact from Boreal Stone Cave
The artifact is hidden in Boreal Stone Cave, located just west of Bruma. Hurry there and enter to find a chest at the cavern’s center. As you approach, Raynil Dralas will confront you from a nearby tunnel.
If you’re pressed for time, feel free to head straight to the cave instead of meeting Carius.
You can’t talk him down; he knows he’s facing either death or imprisonment, and fighting you gives him a fighting chance. Clad in full Mithril armor, he’s a tough adversary. Thankfully, the spacious cavern allows you to keep your distance and attack from afar.
After defeating him, check his body for the keys and unlock the chest. Take the mundane amulet back to Erline; she’ll use a codeword to reveal its true nature. You will receive the leveled Philactery of Litheness, which boosts your speed.
