The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is named after the fiery realm of Oblivion, which contributes to the game’s standing as a classic in the RPG category. With the introduction of **Oblivion Remastered**, the game’s visuals are more breathtaking and intimidating than ever.
As you embark on the optional quest ‘Allies for Bruma’, you might start questioning the relevance of the name ‘Oblivion’. Although this realm is integral to the narrative, players spend limited time traversing Oblivion Gates.
How to Start Allies for Bruma
‘Allies for Bruma’ is an optional quest, meaning it’s not necessary to finish it to move the main storyline along. However, you should complete it before beginning ‘Defense of Bruma’. You can initiate ‘Allies for Bruma’ after finishing ‘Bruma Gate’, where you close the Oblivion Gate near Bruma.
To get started, speak to **Jauffre** in the Cloud Ruler Temple. He’ll inform you that with the Daedra from Oblivion threatening Bruma, you’ll need to recruit additional troops. Though the Bruma soldiers are formidable, they can’t match the Daedra’s infinite numbers. This quest will have you travel to **eight locations**, most of which require you to close a gate in Oblivion.
Completing Allies for Bruma

Location |
Quest Giver |
---|---|
Anvil | Countess Millona Umbranox |
Kvatch | Savlian Matius |
Skingrad | Janus Hassildor |
Chorrol | Countess Arriana Valga |
Imperial City | High Chancellor Ocato |
Bravil | Count Regulus Terentius |
Cheydinhal | Count Andel Indarys |
Leyawiin | Count Marius Caro |
Most of the eight locations follow a similar pattern. You’ll typically speak to the local leader, who will explain they can’t send troops while the Oblivion Gate remains open. You will need to enter the specified gate, ascend the Tower, and remove the Sigil Stone to close it, which then frees up their troops for assistance.
Some cities, like Cheydinhal, allow you to take troops with you, but in most cases, you’ll be on your own in the Oblivion Gates.
One notable exception is Kvatch, where you’ll need to finish the side quest **’Battle for Castle Kvatch’** first to recruit troops. In the Imperial City, **High Chancellor Ocato** will be unable to assist due to the city’s own crisis, but you must still talk to him to progress the quest.
While similar in objectives, some tasks have unique elements worth noting.
The waypoint for ‘Allies for Bruma’ might disappear in the Oblivion realm, but don’t worry; the correct location is still easy to find, and the waypoint will return once you take the Sigil Stone.
Anvil Oblivion Gate

Talk to **Countess Millona Umbranox** in Anvil Castle before heading to the nearby Oblivion Gate. She will send two soldiers to assist you. This part of ‘Allies for Bruma’ can be challenging. Upon entering the gate, find the door to the ‘Nether Tunnels’ and navigate through them carefully.
If you’re feeling lost, head deeper underground rather than up, referring to your map for any doors labeled ‘Oblivion Cave’ until finally reaching the exit door also marked ‘Oblivion Cave’. When you leave, go to your left until you find the door indicating ‘Oblivion Cave to The Red Gnash Channels’. Move through the cave until you’re directed to ‘Oblivion Cave to Wastes of Oblivion’.
Be cautious of falling debris while climbing to the Tower, and follow the usual procedure to remove the Sigil Stone at the top, earning your return to Tamriel.
Battle for Castle Kvatch

If you started ‘Allies for Bruma’ after finishing ‘Breaking the Siege of Kvatch’, you might only need to speak to **Savlian Matius** for troops. If you haven’t yet completed ‘Battle for Castle Kvatch’, you’ll need to do so first.
Begin by clearing out the Daedra in the castle, finding the key in the Chapel of Akatosh to unlock the Castle Courtyard. Your goal is to rescue the Count, though he ultimately won’t survive. Take his signet ring and return it to Savlian Matius to complete this section of the quest.
The Wayward Knight

In Cheydinhal, talk to **Count Andel Indarys**, who will inform you that his son, Farwil, has gone into the Oblivion Gate and hasn’t returned. To find him, enter the gate, where you’ll encounter Farwil and **Bremman Senyan** near the Tower.
Like previous Towers, ascend to the top to find the Sigil Stone. Keeping both Farwil and Bremman safe can be tricky, but as long as Farwil makes it through, you’ll receive a choice of either the **Thornblade** or **Staff of Indarys** as your reward from Count Andel Indarys.
If your allies often hinder your attacks, causing them to die, reload the last autosave, have them wait, defeat the adversaries, and then invite them to follow you again.
Finishing Allies for Bruma

Recruiting troops to aid the Bruma guards can significantly ease the upcoming **’Defense of Bruma’** quest. Even if you do not complete all eight locations, each additional ally can streamline that mission. You will notice each group set up camp outside Bruma Castle as preparations commence for the battle.
The quest ‘Allies for Bruma’ will conclude automatically once you finish your last objective; there’s no need to report back to Jauffre to wrap it up.
