In Subnautica 2, your main concerns are keeping your calorie and water levels up. Since you’re underwater, oxygen is also crucial, but you can’t just swim to the surface for air and supplies. You’ll need to actively gather food and water to prevent their levels from dropping too low.
Most of your basic survival needs come from farming specific fish and Water Slugs. Luckily, you’ll find most of these around your starting point, the lifepod. Before you begin gathering food, interact with the Angel Comb near the lifepod to improve your ability to digest the planet’s local food sources.
Where to Find Water
Water is much simpler to obtain compared to food since it primarily comes from one source: Water Slugs. Each Water Slug you collect can be turned into one unit of fresh water. Drinking this restores +40 of your water levels.
Water Slugs are glow-in-the-dark, blue slugs that crawl on surfaces like the seafloor or on rocks. They don’t swim around and move very slowly, so you won’t need to chase them. They are abundant in many areas, including right outside your lifepod, so you’ll likely find plenty without searching too hard.
Because of their glow, Water Slugs are easier to spot at night, so if you have time, collecting them then is a good idea.
You can eat Water Slugs raw to regain some water (+15), but it’s not recommended because they lower your food levels (-5). Use raw Water Slugs only when you’re in a hurry and can’t reach your Fabricator for proper water.
While some cooked foods also help with hydration, most recipes focus on restoring calories. These recipes often require multiple ingredients, which you’ll need to hunt down.
Where to Find Food
Getting food is a bit more involved than water. Throughout your game, you’ll unlock more ways to restore your hunger levels, and cooking recipes usually need several ingredients.
Early on, the easiest food source is the fish swimming near your lifepod. These include several variants, mostly found in groups with names like Moon Fish. You can cook these fish at the Fabricator to produce a cooked fish item, which will restore a small part of your hunger. Eating raw fish is an option but less effective and only recommended for emergencies.
Here’s a quick overview of raw ingredients and where to find them:
- Halfmoon Fish: Swim near the lifepod and shallow areas. Found in groups; provides +15 Food but reduces water by -5.
- Harvestmoon Fish: Similar location to Halfmoon, offering +20 Food and -5 Water.
- Bluemoon Fish: Near shallow zones, restores +10 Food and +5 Water.
- Geordie Fish: Found around the lifepod, gives +20 Food but decreases health by -5.
- Cherimoya Rotsac: Located northwest of the lifepod, usually alone inside a small organic cage that needs breaking to collect. Provides +10 Food and +5 Water.
Other ingredients like Salt and Salt-based items are found on shells of Dead Coral Crabs, mainly near tall, thin rock formations or caves in the south-southeast area. Salt isn’t edible raw.
You can also find Tropical Crab dishes, like the Nutrient Block, in wreckage sites’ storage containers. These provide +40 Food and can be crafted using the Processor with Fibrous Pulp and Pent.
For most recipes, gathering fish and other ingredients from the environment is crucial. Early game, fish by the lifepod are your best bet for quick food. Later, you’ll discover new recipes that combine multiple ingredients like Coral Shavings, Sugar of Saturn, and Deepwing Eggs to craft more substantial meals like Coral Mash or Pavlova, which provide significant boosts to your sustenance and health.
Tracking down these ingredients involves exploring wreckage, caves, and shallow ocean areas. While some foods restore primarily calories, ingredients like Fish and Rotsacs also help with hydration, giving you options depending on your immediate needs.
