Google has introduced its most significant update to the search interface in over a quarter-century: the new intelligent Search box. After being tested in various versions over the past year, this feature is now officially launching worldwide, as announced by Liz Reid, Google’s Head of Search, during Google I/O.
Dubbed “the biggest upgrade to our Search box in over 25 years,” this enhanced search tool is designed to be more dynamic and user-friendly. As you begin typing, the search bar expands, providing ample space to input lengthy queries or detailed prompts. It also incorporates buttons that enable users to upload files, images, documents, Chrome tabs, and other media, facilitating multi-modal searches.
The updated search experience begins rolling out today across all countries and languages where AI Mode is accessible. The design builds on previous iterations, such as expandable search bars and research-focused models, but now integrates AI-powered suggestions that anticipate user intent and help craft more precise questions. It goes beyond traditional autocomplete by offering intelligent recommendations, making the process more intuitive.
This new AI Search box allows searches across multiple input modalities—text, images, files, videos, or Chrome tabs—enhancing versatility. Users will continue to see a diverse array of results similar to the current search experience.
Alongside this update, Google is expanding the AI Overview feature within AI Mode, making it available globally on both desktop and mobile platforms. This feature offers a comprehensive summary of related information, providing quick insights without sifting through numerous links.
Animations and videos are available demonstrating these functionalities, including how the seamless AI Overview works in real time. Additionally, a promotional video highlighting the updates has been shared to showcase the new capabilities and user experience enhancements.
