The Google Search Console link report appears to be malfunctioning, with many SEOs reporting a complete absence of links, while others are experiencing significant drops in link counts. Such fluctuations are not uncommon, but the extent of this issue suggests a possible glitch in the system’s data processing or coding, as a large number of links have disappeared from the report.
Some speculate that the upcoming May 2026 core update could be responsible for the anomalies, but this seems unlikely. The link report and core updates are generally unrelated, and these sorts of reporting delays often span several days rather than coinciding with update schedules.
Currently, there’s an observed drop of approximately 87.5% in the links reported for a specific site when comparing recent data to a snapshot from February 2026. Visual comparisons show the drastic decline, highlighting how widespread and problematic this glitch might be.
Responses from the community include screenshots indicating that this is clearly a bug, with some users noting that they see similar issues across different client profiles. Others find the situation quite amusing, acknowledging that something is definitely wrong with the link reporting feature in Google Search Console.
Despite the confusion, there’s no need to panic if you notice zero links or sharp declines—this appears to be a widespread bug affecting multiple users. An inquiry has been made to John Mueller from Google, who confirmed that the team is investigating the issue. He mentioned that, due to the recent long weekends, a resolution might take some time. Updates from Mueller can be found on Bluesky, confirming that Google is aware of the problem and is working to understand its cause.
