A recent update from Digital Phablet details Google’s annual safety report for Google Maps. The company reports that it has blocked or removed over 292 million policy-violating reviews and eliminated more than 13 million fake business profiles in the past year. Additionally, Google states that it prevented 79 million inaccurate or unverified edits and restricted posting on over 783,000 accounts that violated policies.
Historical data points are available for previous years, including 2019 through 2024, showing trends in review and profile management. For example, in 2025, Google removed 292 fake reviews, and around 13 business profiles were affected. The previous year saw 240 fake reviews removed and 12 profiles impacted. In 2023, 170 fake reviews were removed, along with 12 profiles. The data from earlier years shows consistent efforts to combat misinformation and fake profiles, with notable increases in fake review removal, such as a 21% rise from the previous year.
Google’s new systems, empowered by advanced reasoning capabilities from Gemini, enable rapid detection and blocking of policy-violating suggestions before they appear publicly, including nuanced social or political comments. If a sudden surge of spam reviews occurs, Google quickly removes the fake content, temporarily pauses new reviews on affected profiles, alerts the business owners, and notifies consumers through a banner explaining the review pause.
Furthermore, the platform is rolling out proactive email alerts that allow verified business owners to review and approve important edits to their profiles before these updates are published. Although specific figures for photos and videos removed are not provided for this year, the company highlights that fake reviews saw a 21% increase compared to the previous year, while the count of fake business profiles remained steady.
A visual representation of the data is available as a bar chart illustrating trends over the years, showcasing the ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of Google Maps and improve user trust in business listings.
