On April 22, reports from the “Science and Technology Daily” reveal that Tesla is set to enhance its in-car voice service in China by integrating two advanced AI models. The updates will incorporate ByteDance’s “Doubao Large Model” and DeepSeek’s “DeepSeekChat,” both supported by Volcano Engine, ByteDance’s cloud and AI platform. This marks the most significant upgrade to Tesla’s vehicle voice assistant since its debut in the Chinese market in 2013.
According to the “Cybersecurity Shanghai” WeChat official account, the city of Shanghai approved a new generative AI service on April 21, specifically for Tesla’s car voice systems. The service was officially registered on April 20 under Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and is poised to bring a major leap forward in Tesla’s in-car AI capabilities. A Tesla spokesperson teased the update, saying, “Stay tuned for more.”
Previously, Tesla’s voice assistant user policies outlined the functionalities expected from these new AI integrations. The two models are anticipated to serve distinct yet complementary roles within the vehicle’s system.
The Doubao Large Model will focus on voice command functions, such as setting navigation, controlling media playback, adjusting air conditioning, and querying the owner’s manual—all with simple voice prompts designed for quick and convenient control. Meanwhile, DeepSeek will provide a more advanced AI interaction experience, enabling Tesla owners to engage in natural conversations, receive weather updates, news, and other live information during their drives.
An integral part of this collaboration is Volcano Engine, ByteDance’s technology powerhouse, which supplies core AI technology for this project. Notably, Doubao’s daily token usage has surpassed 120 trillion, making it one of the largest in the world. Tesla’s partnership with Volcano Engine isn’t new; the two companies began working together in August 2025, and this recent registration signifies the official rollout of their joint efforts.
