LONDON: Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged Friday to remain in office to implement change after his Labour Party endured significant losses in local elections across England and in parliamentary votes in Scotland and Wales, raising questions about his leadership capabilities.

Less than two years after securing a decisive victory in a national election, Starmer’s support has waned, with voters withdrawing backing even in traditional Labour strongholds, including London, core industrial regions in central and northern England, and Wales.

The biggest winner was Brexit advocate Nigel Farage’s populist Reform UK party, which gained over 1,000 council seats in England and is poised to serve as the main opposition in Scotland and Wales, where pro-independence parties like the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru hold sway.

Early results reveal a fractured two-party system, with both Labour and Conservative parties losing votes to reformist uprisings, left-wing Green parties, and nationalist movements in Scotland and Wales.

Starmer insists he won’t step down, despite the setbacks. His allies expressed support for a leader whose popularity ratings hit some of the lowest levels seen among British leaders.

“I am not going to walk away,” Starmer told reporters in Ealing, West London, a rare area where Labour managed to hold onto control of the council.

He showed humility by taking full responsibility for the losses, admitting that his government made unnecessary mistakes, including a failure to instill hope in Britain when his party first took power. However, he argued voters are more frustrated with the slow pace of change than with his government’s overall approach and promised to outline specific steps to achieve the change people want and deserve.

In a move that appears to align with a recent government reset, Starmer pledged to intensify efforts to address the cost-of-living crisis, worsened by conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. This message boosted investor confidence, strengthening the pound against the dollar and lowering British borrowing costs—outperforming US and German debt.

Nevertheless, Labour faced profound losses, notably in 136 local councils across England and in Scotland and Wales’ devolved parliaments. These results serve as a crucial barometer of public opinion ahead of the next general election, scheduled for 2029.

While internal leadership challenges seem unlikely at this point, more than 20 Labour lawmakers have publicly and privately suggested that Starmer rethink his position and establish a timetable for stepping down.

“The prime minister can’t take our party into the next election,” said Simon Opher, a Labour legislator from southwest England.

Defense Secretary John Healey dismissed calls for a leadership change, stating that voters do not want the chaos of a leadership contest.

“He’s not leaving, and there won’t be a timetable,” added Technology Secretary Liz Kendall during an interview with BBC News.

Starmer’s task now is to reverse the downturn after losing control of several councils responsible for essential services and facing new nationalist governments in Scotland and Wales. First-time losses in areas like Tameside in Greater Manchester—where Labour had a near 50-year hold—and in Wigan, where Labour lost all 20 seats to Reform, underline the challenge.

Reform UK’s showing was notable, capturing control of London’s Havering borough for the first time, and the Greens securing the mayoralty of Hackney, an area traditionally aligned with Labour. In Havering’s Romford, retiree Gary Orford summarized many voters’ sentiments, stating he would give Farage a chance after believing he had been misled by political promises. “You can only give him a chance,” he remarked.

Polls forecast that Labour may suffer its worst loss of council seats since 1995. By Friday evening, Reform UK had gained 1,151 council seats in England, while Labour lost 1,015 seats. The Conservative Party was down by 466 seats. In Wales, Plaid Cymru secured the most seats in the Welsh Senedd, followed by Reform UK, with the Scottish National Party well ahead in Scotland’s parliament elections.

These outcomes underscore how dramatically the British political landscape has shifted since 2017, when Labour and the Conservatives together garnered 82% of the vote in a general election. The rapid decline of support for Starmer’s Labour highlights the volatility of voter loyalty amidst recent leadership attempts, policy reversals, staff rotations, and scandals, including the controversy over Peter Mandelson’s appointment as Britain’s ambassador to the U.S.
