Sarah Michelle Gellar is gearing up for a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Recent reports have emerged that a reboot of the beloved series is in the works at Hulu and is close to receiving a pilot order. Gellar will reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers, the legendary vampire slayer. The project will be directed and executive produced by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao.
Following the announcement, Gellar shared on Instagram how this reboot came to fruition. She recounted receiving a call three years ago from her friend and mentor, Gail Berman, suggesting a conversation with Chloé Zhao about reviving the show. Gellar initially felt skeptical about revisiting Buffy, but after meeting Zhao for coffee, their discussion extended far beyond the planned twenty minutes. They bonded over their shared passion for the series, reflecting on its significance in their lives.
Although Gellar did not formally commit to the project at that time, she kept the dialogue open with Zhao. Over the ensuing years, they brought in writers Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman to join as showrunners and executive producers for the reboot.
"I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit Buffy and her world," Gellar explained. "But I wouldn’t move forward unless I was confident we could do it justice. This journey has been lengthy, and we are still on that path, ensuring we get it right."
Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally debuted as a movie in 1992, featuring Kristy Swanson in the lead role. Five years later, Gellar took on the character for a television series that aired on The WB for five seasons and subsequently two seasons on UPN, concluding with a total of seven seasons and 144 episodes.
In her closing remarks, Gellar expressed her gratitude for being part of this journey alongside four incredibly talented women who share her love for Buffy. She thanked the fans for their unwavering support and promises that the reboot will be made with them in mind.
