Marvel enthusiasts were taken aback when Robert Downey Jr. made a surprise entrance as Victor Von Doom at the 2024 Comic-Con in Hall H.
After an iconic decade portraying Iron Man, Downey is shifting gears to embody the notorious Doctor Doom. He will take on the role of the central villain in the upcoming Avengers films: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
In addition to Downey’s return, the dynamic duo of Joe and Anthony Russo is back to direct Doomsday and Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers have previously helmed major Marvel blockbusters, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
During a recent chat with Entertainment Tonight, the Russo Brothers hinted at Downey’s significant role in the storytelling for Doom, citing how his input has shaped the character’s development.
“He is deeply involved and incredibly focused,” Joe shared about Downey’s influence on Doom. “He’s crafting backstories and costume ideas… We spoke with him just this morning before arriving here. He loves characters that are rich and complex. He sees a real chance to explore this character to the fullest.”

The Russo Brothers are set to kick off filming on Doomsday in London next month. As is typical with Avengers projects, details remain closely guarded, but both films are expected to feature a plethora of characters, incorporating many beloved Marvel heroes.
Confirmed for the cast of Doomsday are the members of the Fantastic Four: Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which will premiere a year later on May 7, 2027.
