The government has set an ambitious goal to transition 30% of all vehicles to electric power within the next five years, aiming to save around $4.5 billion in fuel imports. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that government employees up to BPS-16 will be able to purchase electric bikes through affordable installment plans, encouraging wider adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
In a high-level meeting focused on promoting EVs nationwide, officials shared that 72 approvals for manufacturing electric motorcycles and rickshaws have already been granted, along with four for electric cars. Additionally, there are 123 pending requests for EV charging stations across the country.
The Prime Minister emphasized that accelerating these initiatives is crucial, especially given regional developments and the country’s future energy needs. Transitioning to EVs is seen as a strategic move to lower imports, safeguard the environment, and bolster energy security. He also underscored the importance of transparency in distributing subsidies for electric motorbikes under the National EV Policy, urging authorities to speed up scheme implementation.
