The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has issued a strong statement condemning Israel’s recent decision to recognize the so-called “Somaliland” as an independent nation, calling it a clear violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and recognized borders. This condemnation was made during the 22nd Extraordinary Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers on Saturday at the organization’s headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The meeting was convened to address the serious developments in Somalia following Israel’s announcement on December 26, 2025.
OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha highlighted that this period is particularly sensitive. He emphasized that Israel’s recognition of “Somaliland” sets a dangerous precedent, blatantly breaches international law, and threatens regional stability and security in the Horn of Africa.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar attended the session, during which two resolutions were approved: one condemning Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and another opposing efforts to displace Palestinians. The organization’s resolution firmly supported Somalia’s sovereignty and expressed solidarity with the Somali government and its people. It rejected any actions or measures attempting to undermine Somalia’s unity or territorial integrity and condemned Israel’s move as a breach of international law and the UN Charter.
The OIC’s resolution warned that recognizing “Somaliland” threatens peace and stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, with potential repercussions for broader regional and international peace. It reaffirmed that “Somaliland” is an inseparable part of Somalia and holds no independent legal status. Any attempt to recognize or separate from Somalia is considered blatant interference in Somalia’s internal affairs and a severe violation of its sovereignty.
The organization also denounced a visit by an Israeli official to Somaliland on January 6, 2026, describing it as a serious breach of Somali sovereignty. It further condemned any foreign military, security, or intelligence presence on Somali soil without the government’s approval, particularly Israeli presence, declaring such actions as crossing a “red line.”
The OIC urged member states and international organizations to avoid any official or unofficial engagement with Somaliland outside the framework of Somalia’s sovereignty. It also issued a stern warning against cooperating with Israeli efforts to forcibly displace Palestinians, including those in Gaza, condemning such actions as violations of international law and humanitarian standards.
The organization called on its Secretary General to solicit the support of the UN Security Council, General Assembly, and Secretary General to address Israel’s actions. It emphasized the need for the international community, especially permanent members of the Security Council, to uphold their responsibilities to maintain peace and security in the Horn of Africa.
