A troubling incident on an IndiGo flight traveling from Mumbai to Kolkata has gained widespread attention on social media, sparking outrage and calls for strict action after a Muslim passenger experiencing a panic attack was assaulted by another traveler.
Indian media outlets report that the incident occurred on Friday as the plane was preparing for takeoff.
A young Muslim man began to exhibit signs of distress, reportedly crying and begging to be allowed to leave the plane. Instead of offering help, one passenger responded by slapping him across the face as he walked by—a moment caught on video and shared widely online.
The shocking footage prompted immediate condemnation, with many social media users condemning the act as a clear case of Islamophobia. Commentators are demanding that the individual be permanently banned from flying and added to India’s no-fly list for disruptive behavior.
In response to the public outcry, IndiGo released a statement condemning the assault, calling the behavior “absolutely unacceptable” and reaffirming their commitment to ensuring the safety and respect of all passengers.
The airline confirmed that the attacker was handed over to security authorities after arrival and that the incident has been reported to the relevant regulatory bodies. They are now planning to pursue disciplinary measures under rules governing unruly passengers, which could include a period on the no-fly list.
“Our crew followed established protocols during the incident,” the airline stated, adding that the remaining flight proceeded without further incident after the situation was managed and the distressed passenger was assisted by staff and fellow travelers.
Medical experts commenting on the event emphasized that individuals experiencing panic attacks should be met with empathy and kindness, not hostility.
Meanwhile, social media continues to demand justice, with many urging IndiGo and aviation authorities to impose strong penalties on the attacker to send a clear message that discrimination and violence are unacceptable in air travel.
