Integrated circuit design engineers and cloud computing architects are among the top earners in China, with annual salaries surpassing CNY400,000 (around USD58,300), according to a recent report from a human resources services provider.
The typical yearly salary for IC (integrated circuit) engineers reaches CNY400,591 in major first-tier cities, while even in smaller cities outside the top tiers, salaries average around CNY350,132. Cloud computing architects are experiencing high demand as the country advances its digital transformation, earning an average of CNY491,253 annually in first-tier urban centers.
As automotive digitalization accelerates, auto algorithm engineers in first-tier cities can earn up to CNY384,258 per year. Meanwhile, as factories become more automated, the average annual pay for automation engineers in these cities can reach CNY235,291.
The high-tech sector led wage growth among all industries last year, increasing by approximately 4.9 percent. Specialists with expertise in foundational technologies such as core algorithms and chip design are expected to see rising compensation, the report indicates.
Among China’s major cities, first-tier metros topped the monthly salary charts last year. Shanghai and Beijing led with averages of CNY12,742 ($1,860) and CNY12,518 respectively, highlighting the concentration of high-tech activities and a dense pool of skilled professionals.
Wage increases are also gaining momentum in emerging first-tier cities. Monthly earnings in Hangzhou (CNY10,165) and Nanjing (CNY9,624) are nearing those of Guangzhou. Given their lower living costs, these cities are projected to become highly cost-effective employment hubs in the future.
