HBO has just released the first teaser for Task, a new crime drama created by Brad Ingelsby, known for his work on Mare of Easttown. If the series is even half as compelling as the teaser suggests, HBO could very well have a standout show on their hands this year.
Set in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Task features Mark Ruffalo in the role of an FBI agent tasked with investigating a string of violent heists in the region. Ruffalo’s character is at the helm of a rookie task force working to track down the criminals behind these crimes.
The teaser gives a glimpse of Tom Pelphrey as the cunning architect of the heists, portraying an everyday family man who dons a skull mask during the robberies. The footage hints at an inevitable clash between the lawman and the criminal that promises to be intense.
The cast of Task also includes Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton.

Brad Ingelsby serves as the creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer of Task. Episodes will be directed by executive producers Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Other executive producers include Ruffalo, Mark Roybal, Paul Lee, David Crockett, and Ron Schmidt, with Nicole Jordan-Webber and Jeremy Yaches as co-executive producers.
This marks Ingelsby’s first television project since the acclaimed Mare of Easttown, which starred Kate Winslet, Julianne Nicholson, Evan Peters, and Jean Smart. That series garnered 16 Emmy nominations and took home four awards, including Outstanding Lead Actress for Winslet.
If critics respond positively to Task, it could be a strong competitor at the 2026 Emmys.
Task is set to debut this September on HBO and will be available for streaming on HBO Max. The series will consist of seven episodes released weekly.
