A fireworks factory in Hunan Province, China, experienced a blast on Monday afternoon, resulting in 21 fatalities and 61 injuries. China’s President Xi Jinping has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The explosion occurred in Changsha, a city known for fireworks manufacturing, around 4:40 p.m. local time (8:40 a.m. GMT). Reports from CCTV and Xinhua indicate the scene was filled with thick smoke, collapsed structures, and scattered debris, with footage circulating online, though its authenticity has not been independently verified.
Close to 500 emergency personnel, including firefighters, rescue workers, and medical teams, responded to the scene. The explosion took place at Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company, although attempts to reach the business for comment were unsuccessful as no phone listing was available.
President Xi Jinping called for a swift inquiry to determine the cause of the blast, emphasizing the need for accountability. The incident prompts concerns given China’s significant role in the global fireworks market; last year, the country exported over $1.14 billion worth of fireworks—more than two-thirds of worldwide sales, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity.
Xi has also directed officials to enhance safety measures in critical industries, strengthen risk assessments, and ensure the security of public safety and property. This call for improved disaster response capacity follows last week’s directives for nationwide upgrades in emergency preparedness.
