A fireworks factory explosion in Liuyang, Hunan Province, China, has resulted in increased casualties and damage.
Images show debris and destroyed structures following the blast on May 6, 2026. According to reports, one person is still missing, and intensive on-site rescue efforts have been concluded. Currently, 51 individuals are hospitalized for treatment.
The death toll has risen from 26 to 37, marking it as the deadliest explosion in China since 2019. The incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. local time in Liuyang, known as China’s leading hub for fireworks production, responsible for 60% of the nation’s supply and about 70% of exports.
Authorities have completed investigation and rescue efforts, and eight individuals have been detained for questioning over the cause of the blast. An investigation is ongoing, overseen by China’s top prosecutors. Meanwhile, Hunan has ordered a temporary shutdown and safety inspections at all fireworks facilities in the city.
Previously, a fireworks factory explosion in Hunan in June claimed nine lives, and in 2019, a chemical plant explosion in Jiangsu Province resulted in 78 deaths.
