When a remote stops responding or a child’s favorite toy malfunctions, the typical dilemma is: are the batteries dead or is there a fault with the device?

A straightforward, clever test provides a quick and dependable way to assess the actual power level of a battery, preventing unnecessary disposal of functioning batteries or unwarranted replacement purchases.

Is the battery charged or drained? This simple test uncovers the truth

You only need the battery you wish to examine. If possible, have a new, fully charged battery on hand for comparison. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Place a flat, stable surface like a table in front of you.
  2. Drop the battery vertically onto the surface from a height of about 20 centimeters (roughly 8 inches).
  3. Observe how the battery lands and behaves afterward: A fully charged battery tends to topple over and stay still. An empty battery, by contrast, often bounces back a little and may jump up a few centimeters.

Why? Alkaline batteries have a gel-like substance inside that absorbs the impact when they are fully charged. When the battery is drained, this substance dries out and hardens, making the battery more prone to bouncing back.

Four tips to prolong your battery’s lifespan

  • Properly turn off devices: Always shut off devices completely when not in use. Devices left on standby can continue to draw power, which drains the batteries unnecessarily.
  • Remove unused batteries: If you won’t be using an item for some time, take the batteries out. This helps prevent power loss and protects the device from potential battery leakage.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Store batteries away from hot or cold environments. Excessive heat or cold can impair chemical reactions inside the battery, reducing its lifespan.
  • Use matching batteries: Do not mix new and old batteries or different brands and types (such as alkaline and NiMH) in the same device. Variations in voltage and discharge rates can lead to diminished performance and shorten battery life.
