If you’re running Amazon RDS for MySQL with the specific older minor versions listed, it’s important to understand what’s happening next. AWS has announced that support for these minor versions will end on October 31, 2025. Starting that day, you won’t be able to create new instances with those versions, and your existing databases will be upgraded automatically during a scheduled maintenance window.

Here’s what you can do to stay in control: Before October 31, 2025, you should manually upgrade your RDS for MySQL databases from the affected minor versions to version 5.7.44-RDS.20250213 or newer. This proactive upgrade is recommended to reduce the chances of unexpected downtime and to ensure your databases are up-to-date with the latest patches and security fixes.

The upgrade process requires a period of downtime, so it’s best to plan it during a scheduled maintenance window that works for you. AWS offers a neat feature called Blue/Green Deployments, which uses binlog logical replication to make the upgrade smoother and minimize downtime. Using this method can help ensure the transition is seamless and less disruptive to your operations.

To address your specific question about timing: If you don’t manually upgrade your databases before October 31, the automatic upgrade will occur during your next scheduled maintenance window, which could be on November 1 or later, depending on your configuration. If you want to have more control or possibly avoid the automatic upgrade during inconvenient times, it’s best to plan and perform the upgrade beforehand.

Remember, these upgrades are mandatory because running unsupported versions can expose your databases to security vulnerabilities and compatibility issues. Staying ahead with updates helps keep your data safe and your system running smoothly.
