Zelda: TOTK Guide - Locating & Defeating Wild Lynels

Select Language:

Lynels are enemies in the game “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.” They are powerful creatures that look like a mix between a horse and a giant, with some features of a centaur or minotaur. Their quick movements and strong attacks make them a tough opponent, even in the later stages of the game. You can find them all over Hyrule and in the Depths, where they are infected by Gloom.

Hunting Lynels is worth it because they drop some of the best materials used for combining items in the game. However, defeating one isn’t easy. When players meet a Lynel on the surface, it can be difficult to bring it down. Encountering a Lynel deep underground often feels like a death sentence. Still, many players look forward to the challenge.

All Lynel Locations in Tears of the Kingdom

There are 15 Lynels on the surface of Hyrule and 19 in the Depths. Five of these are located in the Floating Coliseum in the Depths, with another nearby, making it a great spot to farm for Lynel parts. Lynels come in different types, each with its level of difficulty.

Types of Lynels

There are four main types: Red Lynels, Blue-Maned Lynels, White-Maned Lynels, and the very tough Silver Lynels. Some locations change the Lynel to a Silver version after defeating a few and passing a Blood Moon. These special versions are marked with “Silver Lynel” in parentheses.

The following tables show every location of Lynel in Hyrule and the Depths, along with their types and where they can be found.

Lynel Types Explained

  • The basic version is the Red Lynel, which is the easiest to fight.
  • Next is the Blue-Maned Lynel, tougher than the red.
  • The White-Maned Lynel is even harder and moves faster.
  • The most difficult is the Silver Lynel, especially the Armored Silver, which has a tough shell and many moves. These are the strongest Lynels with the highest health and damage.

How to Fight a Lynel

The difficulty depends on the type. Always start by attacking the weaker Red Lynel and prepare for tougher battles as you go. Armored Lynels have a tough exterior, so you should break their shell first with blunt weapons or bombs.

Lynels have several moves, like shooting projectiles, charging, or swinging their horns. Learning how to dodge and time your attacks is the key. For example:

  • When a Lynel charges or swings, a well-timed dodge can trigger a Flurry Rush, causing massive damage.
  • You can target their central horn with explosive arrows or special items to stun them.
  • Some players use clever tactics, like setting grass on fire to create updrafts and shoot better arrows or hit from above.

Keep in mind that Lynels are resistant to elemental damage, so fuse powerful weapons and tools to defeat them. Successfully defeating Lynels gives you valuable materials and rewards that make the challenge worth it.
