Where Are Lev and Yara? Key Characters Absent from TLOU Season 2

The Last of Us season 2 has wrapped up, but it’s just the start for Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby Anderson. This raises a question: will we see two of Abby’s friends from the game who were missing from the show?

While the season ends on an intense cliffhanger, the adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 is far from complete. For perspective, finishing the second game can take up to 40 hours of gameplay, while the first game is about half that. This means there’s a lot more story to unfold, and we can likely expect new characters to join the mix—fingers crossed for Lev and Yara!

Lev and Yara are siblings from the Seraphite community who cross paths with Abby and develop a close relationship, with Lev becoming a key figure in Abby’s journey. Despite their significance in The Last of Us Part 2, they were absent in the second season. Will they make an appearance in season 3? Let’s explore.

Who are Lev and Yara? *SPOILERS*

In The Last of Us Part 2, Lev (played by Ian Alexander) and Yara (performed by Victoria Grace) are siblings raised in a cult known as the Seraphites. Yara was chosen as a warrior at a young age, trained to battle the WLF (Washington Liberation Front). However, everything changes when Lev decides to shave his head and openly identify as male, a decision that puts him at grave risk within the cult. Yara, realizing she must protect her brother, helps him escape, condemning them both as outcasts.

The siblings encounter Abby while she’s in danger from the Seraphites. After a harrowing fight, where Yara’s arm is shattered, they manage to flee to an abandoned aquarium where Owen and Mel, characters who have also faced their own fates in season 2, are hiding. Season 2 lays groundwork suggesting that Abby and her friends are turning against their previous allegiances, as seen when Isaac expresses concerns about Abby’s absence.

Owen and Mel hope to leave for Santa Barbara to find the Fireflies, while Lev wants to convince their mother to join them. Just then, the WLF launches an attack on the Seraphite island, leading to a heartbreaking moment where Yara is shot while trying to save Lev’s life, ultimately sacrificing herself to help Abby and Lev escape.

In the game, Lev is with Abby when they learn about Owen and Mel’s deaths. He also plays a crucial role in the confrontation with Ellie and Dina, helping Abby gain the upper hand. At the climax of the game, Abby and Lev escape by boat after Ellie chooses not to kill them.

Will Lev and Yara be in The Last of Us season 3?

In 2023, both Ian Alexander and Victoria Grace expressed their eagerness to reprise their roles as Lev and Yara in season 2. However, considering how the show is adapting the storyline, it seems more plausible that Lev and Yara will appear in season 3. Season 2 takes us back to Abby’s early days in Seattle, similar to the game, which could hint at where their stories will interweave.

Lev and Yara are integral to Abby’s three-day experience in Seattle, and it’s likely that season 3 will capture this narrative. There’s even a chance that a potential season 4 could explore the events at The Farm and in Santa Barbara. This setup would allow Lev’s storyline to develop across two seasons, culminating in the ultimate conflict between Ellie and Abby. Although nothing has been confirmed, the possibility remains open. With Jeffrey Wright reprising his role as Isaac, it might suggest that Alexander and Grace could return as well.

You can currently stream The Last of Us seasons 1 and 2 on HBO Max in the United States and on Sky and NOW in the UK. For more recommendations, check out our lists of the best shows and movies available on HBO Max right now.
