As of now, there’s only one guaranteed method to locate and capture Wiglett in Pokémon GO. This also narrows down your options for evolving it into Wugtrio, and hopefully snagging a Shiny variant along the way. Since its introduction during the Rediscover Kanto event in April 2024, this elusive Garden Eel Pokémon has become a tricky catch for Trainers. If you’re after this Paldean Water-type, you might think it’s merely a different version of Diglett, but that’s not the case. Nonetheless, Wiglett can still be a valuable addition to your Pokédex.
Though it may resemble the Gen 1 Mole Pokémon with its distinctive beady eyes and red nose, Wiglett stands as its own entity rather than a Paldean variant of Diglett. The same goes for its evolution: Wugtrio is not merely a Paldean counterpart of Dugtrio. With an array of potent Water-type and Ground-type moves, Wugtrio can effectively tackle formidable Fire-type opponents, much like those included in the latest Pokémon GO Raid boss roster.
Where to Encounter Wiglett in Pokémon GO
Hit the Beach
To find and catch Wiglett in Pokémon GO, head to a beach biome. The game features different biomes—like forest, mountain, and urban areas—each reflective of real-life environments. Biomes determine which Pokémon appear, and for Wiglett’s beach habitats, players must venture to areas that have bodies of water such as rivers, oceans, or lakes.
Keep in mind that Wiglett is classified as a rare spawn, so it’s a good idea to save your Daily Adventure Incense for beach outings. Alternatively, you can purchase PokéCoins to extend spawn times from 15 minutes to 60. If you’re in the right biome, you’ll notice other Water-type Pokémon like Magikarp, Marill, and Goldeen appearing. Don’t forget to check the radar in the bottom right corner of your screen, which shows nearby Pokémon including Wiglett’s silhouette near its closest PokéStop.
If you come across a PokéStop in any of the beach biomes, use a Lure Module to boost your chances of encountering a Wiglett.
How to Evolve Wiglett into Wugtrio
Using Pinap Berries and Walking with Your Buddy
To evolve Wiglett into Wugtrio in Pokémon GO, players must spend 50 Wiglett Candies and hit the “Evolve” button on Wiglett’s summary page. Since Wiglett is hard to find, using a Pinap Berry when you capture one is the best strategy to quickly accumulate Candy. Pinap Berries double the amount of Candy you receive for each catch, so be sure to save any you acquire from spinning PokéStops or opening Gifts from friends.
While you await the next Wiglett spawn, consider walking with one as your Buddy Pokémon. When set as your Buddy, Wiglett will earn you one Candy for every three kilometers walked. This means after catching at least one Wiglett with a Pinap Berry, you can accumulate enough Candy for evolution over time by walking 132 km casually while playing the game in the weeks ahead.
Can Wiglett Be Shiny?
Not Yet Available
Currently, neither Wiglett nor Wugtrio can be Shiny in Pokémon GO. While Wiglett is available to catch, not every new Pokémon gets a Shiny form right away. These shiny variants are sometimes released during specific events, like Community Days or seasonal events, where Wiglett could be included with other Pokémon. Even if a Shiny version becomes available, it would still be challenging to find due to its rarity, although an event could increase its chances of appearing.
If that variant is eventually released in an event without enhanced odds, make sure to use Incense, Daily Adventure Incense, or Lure Modules to boost its spawn rates when you’re in the right locations. This approach will give you the best chance to find one. Just remember to explore beach biomes with bodies of water like rivers, lakes, and oceans, and you’ll be on your way to adding Wiglett and Wugtrio to your Pokédex.
