In I Am Future, there are plenty of ways to thrive. Your primary objective is to survive, which involves foraging for food, crafting essential tools, and sending your drone out on quests. The game combines elements of both modern technology and primitive life, as it takes place in a near-future world where nature has reclaimed the urban landscape.
While technical abilities are crucial, you can’t rely on technology alone for sustenance. One of the essential survival skills is fishing, an age-old method that plays an important role in your gameplay. Here’s what you need to know about fishing in I Am Future.
Fishing Gear and Requirements
To start fishing, you need to find an appropriate fishing spot. The game features two locations where you can fish—one is accessible fairly early in the game, while the second may take a bit longer to reach.
At the fishing spots, you need to sit on a chair to begin your fishing. Next, you must have a fishing rod, which you can find in the first fishing area at the docks. After obtaining your first rod, you can upgrade it two times. Keep in mind that you must have the rod in your inventory to fish.
Once equipped with the rod, you’re ready to cast your line. You can choose bait, but it’s not mandatory to catch fish. The type of fish you catch depends on your fishing location, the rod you are using, and whether you’ve selected any bait. The game’s interface will display the potential catches based on your current setup.
When you start fishing, your bait will shake, signaling that a fish is nibbling. At this moment, you’ll begin a mini-game where a pointer spins, and you’ll need to time your clicks to align the pointer with the white sections on the dial. The number of white sections varies depending on the fish species you’re trying to catch.
Failing to complete the mini-game means you won’t catch anything, and regardless of the outcome, you’ll lose the bait you used.
Fishing Locations and Access
There are two main fishing locations in the game. The first is on the Base Rooftop. After your first night, and once you’ve removed a leech from Earl, the talking fridge, you will need to pull an Infected Weed from the ground. This will give you the StopWeed Spray.
Look for another leech near the door above Earl’s spot. After spraying it, you will gain access to the elevator behind the door, which will take you to the docks—your first fishing area.
At the docks, you’ll discover the Handmade Rod, your initial fishing tool.
The second location is on the Hotel Rooftop. It will take some time to reach this area because you’ll need to finish constructing a bridge first. Once the bridge is complete, you can explore the Hotel Rooftop for fishing. Additionally, there’s a Strong Fishing Line package located at this fishing spot that you’ll need to upgrade your rod.
Fishing Rods
After obtaining the Handmade Rod, you can upgrade it a total of two times. Upgrading allows you to catch a wider variety of fish. Here’s a list of the fishing rods and the materials needed for each upgrade:
Fishing Rod | Required Materials | How to Obtain Required Materials |
---|---|---|
Handmade Rod | None | Just go to the first fishing spot and find this rod. |
Good Quality Rod | Handmade Rod, Strong Fishing Line | Obtain Strong Fishing Line from the Hotel Rooftop after building the bridge. |
Professional Rod | Good Quality Rod, 20 Metal Frame, 15 Electrolytic Solution, 12 Foam Panel | Craft Metal Frames, Electrolytic Solutions, and Foam Panels at their respective workbenches. |
List of Baits
While bait is generally used when fishing, you can try fishing without it, though your catches will mainly be junk. However, in times of resource scarcity, going baitless can sometimes yield surprises. Below you will find the types of bait available and how to acquire them:
Bait | How to Obtain |
---|---|
Mollusk Bait | Craft at the Workbench with Biomass (1:1 ratio) |
Clam | Only obtained by fishing—potential catch at the Docks without bait, or guaranteed with Mollusk Bait. |
Earthworm | Harvested from plants in Garden Beds. |
Spoon Lure | Crafted using three Plastics at the Workbench. |
Leech Tail | Obtained by removing Infected Weeds or killing Leeches. |
List of Fish You Can Catch
The type of fish you catch will depend on the bait used, your fishing location, and the rod you’re using. Here’s a table of the fish available in the game:
Fish | Required Bait | Minimum Rod Level | Location |
---|---|---|---|
Anglerfish | Leech Tail | Professional Rod | Anywhere |
Blackbatus | Leech Tail | Handmade Rod | Anywhere |
Clack-n-Slash Crab | Clam | Good Quality Rod | Anywhere |
Clam | None/Mollusk Bait | Handmade Rod | Docks |
Electric Eel | Earthworm | Professional Rod | Anywhere |
List of Sunken Trash You Can Catch
Sunken trash refers to items that aren’t fish but can be caught while fishing. The advantage is, you don’t need bait for these catches. Here’s a list of some possible "trash" you might reel in:
Possible Loot | Minimum Rod Level | Location |
---|---|---|
Empty Bottle | Handmade Rod | Hotel Rooftop |
Microchip | Handmade Rod | Anywhere |
In summary, fishing in I Am Future adds an exciting layer to your survival experience in a rewilded world. Whether you’re hunting for fish to supplement your meals or fishing for junk, mastering this activity can greatly enhance your chances of survival.
