The first Tomodachi Life was released in North America in June 2014. After a wait of over a decade, the sequel finally arrived in April 2026, called Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. In this charming cozy game, you can create a series of Miis and watch them live and interact on an island that you design yourself.
While some features from the original game are missing, Living the Dream offers several upgrades worth celebrating after all this time.
9. The Depth of the Mii Creator
The Mii Creator has always allowed for customization, and now it’s even more detailed. You can craft Miis that resemble your friends, family, celebrities, cartoon characters, animals, or even create bizarre and unique characters. You have a wider selection of facial features and more precise placement options. Plus, there’s now the ability to draw freely on facial features, opening up a world of new creative possibilities.
Whether you’re designing a character based on someone you love or a fun fictional creation, the game lets you hone every detail more than ever before.
8. Platonic Roommates
In previous versions, Miis had to be married before they could live together. Now, you can have friends move in as roommates, just like couples or Miis with crushes on each other. They’ll even keep their own rooms upstairs if they share a house with someone else. This change means any Mii—whether friends, crushes, or just neighbors—can live together, not just married couples.
7. Same-Sex Relationships and Pronoun Options
The original game restricted Miis to a gender binary, meaning they could only be male or female. In Living the Dream, you can set each Mii’s romantic preferences and even change their pronouns if they prefer something other than he/him or she/her. Miis can marry anyone they’re attracted to, regardless of gender, giving you much more freedom to create diverse relationships.
6. Introducing Miis to Each Other
Previously, Miis could live together only if they were already in a relationship or marriage, which required some effort to get them to that point. Now, it’s easier to get Miis to meet and connect. Just drag one Mii close to another on the island or in the residents menu, and sparks may fly depending on their personalities. This makes forming friendships or romantic connections much simpler and more spontaneous.
5. New Clothing Types
Clothing has always been a big part of Tomodachi Life, with stores offering daily new items and the campsite providing unique items from distant places. Now, Living the Dream expands this even further. There are more clothing options—such as necklaces, tails, socks, and accessories. You can also customize clothing designs that your Miis will wear around the island, giving each character a more personal style.
4. Additional Mini-Games
Mini-games have been a staple of the series, like identifying silhouettes in the Shadow Quiz or pixelated objects in the Pixel Quiz. While these staples are still present, new mini-games are now available. Build new buildings on your island to unlock options like flipping coins, naming items without repeats, or even knocking down your Miis like bowling pins.
3. Customized Items
In the original game, you could collect clothing, foods, treasures, and more, but the choices were limited to what the game offered. Now, almost everything is customizable. At the Palette House, you can unlock new options using the Wishing Fountain and design everything from home interiors and exteriors to edible foods for your Miis. The game puts almost unlimited creative control in your hands, letting you create a truly personalized island experience.
2. Island Lingo
One of the most popular features in Living the Dream is the Island Lingo. Your Miis will ask you to fill-in-the-blank questions about the real world, conversation topics, their feelings, and more. What you tell them can influence how they behave and interact with others. Many fans enjoy using this feature to make their island uniquely their own, and the absence of a censor adds added fun and unpredictability to the conversations.
1. Little Quirks
Your Miis have always had personality traits, but Living the Dream introduces dozens of new quirks that make each Mii feel more unique. These quirks affect how they stand, walk, say hello, express emotions, and more. You can adjust their hunger levels, facial expressions during conversations, and other personality features. As you level up your Miis, you gain more options to customize their quirks and make each one stand out even more.
