This content includes some basic spoilers about locations and equipment in Subnautica 2.
Even though the game is still in Early Access, it already has many unique resources to find. Some important items, like Conduit Crystal, are tough to locate even when you know where they are. Another key ingredient you’ll need is Creature Enamel, especially as you explore the Mod Station features of the game.
Just like in our previous guide, you’ll be heading to the Alien Ruins to get Creature Enamel. This area has some of the more dangerous sea creatures, but unlike Conduit Crystal, this resource can typically be found easily once you know where to look.
Why Do You Need Creature Enamel?
Creature Enamel is needed to turn regular glass into Enameled Glass, which is used for many upgrades in Subnautica 2. For example, you’ll eventually discover a blueprint for the Feedback Resonator, a weapon that throws projectiles and plays a part in an important main quest.
Enameled Glass is also essential for building a module that allows your Tadpole sub to go deeper underwater without breaking, along with the Strike Armor mod that protects against collisions. If you like building habitats in deep waters, you’ll need Enameled Glass to craft a “Time of Day Display” — basically a wall clock that tells you whether it’s day or night.
To make Enameled Glass, combine one unit of regular Glass with one unit of Creature Enamel in a Fabricator.
Where to Find Creature Enamel
Once you get past the Leviathan and enter the Alien Ruins area, you’ll encounter a territorial shark called the Needler Mango. It stands out with its bright red markings and is usually heard before you see it, as it shoots javelin-like darts that make a rhythmic crunch and a thunk sound when they hit walls or your vehicle.
Before reaching the Alien Ruins basecamp, about 1300 meters east of the Lifepod, you’ll notice Needler sharks around the mountains. Near them, you can find Enamel Husks that look like clusters of white sticks or bones — imagine shattered plastic cutlery pressed into a big, gray-y, chewing gum-like substance. Use your Sonic Resonator to blast these clusters apart and extract Creature Enamel, often several units at a time.
One thing to keep in mind: Needlers aren’t shy about using your Tadpole for target practice, even when you’re not controlling it. After gathering Creature Enamel, you might return to find your Tadpole badly damaged or knocked into a crevice by their darts. It’s a good idea to always keep a Repair Tool handy so you can fix your vehicle and safely carry your loot back to your base.
Subnautica 2 is currently available in Early Access on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
