After you’ve had a chance to wander around the Vatican in Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, it’s time to test your detective skills. The journey to track down the stolen mummy will take you into the sewers underneath Vatican City, where an ancient riddle protects the entrance to a hidden tomb.
To solve this riddle, you’ll need to be observant, looking for faded inscriptions and timeworn murals while carefully navigating through cobweb-filled crypts that are best left undisturbed. This guide will lead you from the comfort of Antonio’s library to the shadows of the catacombs, if you’re brave enough.
How To Obtain The Wine Bottle
The riddle revolves around the Sacred Wounds—those endured by Christ on the cross. To kick off your challenge, you’ll need sacramental wine, which symbolizes blood. You can acquire this from Antonio after you provide him with four photographs of the Strange Inscriptions located around the Vatican.
Use the map to locate Inscriptions while you’re on the Secret Of Giants quest.
When you bring the four photos to Antonio, arrange them on his desk and use the magnifying glass to highlight the gold images. Continue as Indy and Antonio piece together the clues. Once you decode the text on the last inscription, Antonio will hand you the wine.
How To Access The Vatican Sewers
Exit the library and head east toward the Vatican Post Office, where you picked up the camera. Your goal, the Tower of Nicholas the Fifth, is the circular building across the street. A guard is stationed at the main entrance and can see through your disguise, so proceed with caution when entering the building.
Once inside, make your way to the sunlit chapel at the back. Snap a picture of the relief on the wall, then pour the wine into the basin in front of the altar. This will cause the relief of St. George to protrude from the wall, making it movable.
Rotate the relief by 180 degrees so that St. George is positioned above the Dragon, causing the wall to slide back, granting you access to the catacombs.
Exploring The Tunnels
Grab the torch just inside the entryway and light it using the candle on the altar. Before heading down, climb the stairs to reach the tower, jumping over gaps as you go. There, you’ll find a lost relic waiting for you.
Continue descending until you reach a chamber with torches on the wall that you can ignite. Once lit, place your torch in the remaining sconce to unlock the door, granting you entry to the Sacred Wounds puzzle room.
How To Decipher The Sacred Wounds Puzzle
In front of you is an image depicting the Crucifixion, complete with levers near each of the five wounds. Pour wine into the central basin to activate the levers and commence the puzzle. Your task is to place each lever in its correct position. Flanking the main mechanism are two murals, each with basins in front. Pouring wine into the basin of each mural will unveil a Roman numeral. For the left mural, you’ll need to remove a fallen bust from the basin first.
Each mural highlights a part of Christ’s body with a halo; match the Roman numeral to the highlighted hand, foot, or chest to find out where to position the corresponding lever.
There are two more murals in the left room and one on the right. You can enter the left room easily, but the door will close behind you. Find an iron rod and break through the wall beside the statue of Longinus to return to the main chamber.
For the right room, it’s locked, but you can squeeze through a gap in the wall next to the door and then open it from the inside.
Remember to take pictures of each mural along the way for extra Adventure Points.
