The adventure game, Under the Island, combines traditional Zelda-style gameplay with humor and storytelling reminiscent of 1990s cartoons. As you play, you’ll encounter various puzzles that need to be solved before you can move forward in each dungeon or area. Some puzzles are straightforward, while others can be a bit tricky, but they all keep the game fun and interesting.
When I reviewed Under the Island for Screen Rant, I really enjoyed the different types of puzzles and the creative ways they are designed. Most are essential to finish the main story, but there are several that are optional. One such area is the Cursed Chicken Coop, which isn’t required to complete the game but can offer rewards to make gameplay a little easier.
The Cursed Chicken Coop is located roughly in the center of the map, just north of the big house with the guard dog. To access this area, you need to have already unlocked the shovel, as it’s needed to fill in a hole blocking your way to a well next to the coop.
Once inside the well, you’ll meet Ghost Chick, a friendly ghost chicken who’s quite bored. These ghost chickens like to create nonogram puzzles for adventurers, and since you’re the only one who shows up, you’re the lucky player to solve them.
The first puzzle involves digging at a specific spot to reveal a grid with numbers along the rows and columns. These numbers indicate how many spots you need to dig in each line. Solving this initial puzzle reveals an arrow pointing to the bottom right corner.
After completing each puzzle, the door at the top of the screen opens so you can move to the next level. All subsequent puzzles follow a similar process: dig in the indicated spot to reveal a new grid, then figure out which spots to dig based on the numbers provided. Some clues, like the bottom row and certain columns, make the puzzles easier because they require digging in all the spots.
The second puzzle, once solved, opens the door to the next room. Here, you continue the pattern—digging in designated spots, which then reveals new puzzles. Clues in certain rows and columns can help you identify which spots to dig next, simplifying the process.
The third puzzle results in a shape that resembles a head with a top hat, with certain rows and columns needing to be fully dug. Use elimination and the given clues to figure out the remaining spots.
The fourth level’s puzzle creates a star shape after completion, following the same method of starting with obvious rows and columns and filling in the rest based on logical deductions.
The final, fifth puzzle is the most complex. It looks somewhat like a distorted letter “N,” and requires careful digging, especially in columns asking for six holes, starting from the bottom left.
When you finish the last puzzle, you find a small room with a treasure chest. Inside, you’ll discover a Ghost Key, which is used to unlock the Cursed Chicken Coop on land. Talking to the Ghost Chick allows you to teleport back to the surface instantly, saving time.
The ultimate reward for solving all these puzzles is the Wonder Magnet, a passive item that makes collecting items easier. As you move through the game, any dropped money or items will automatically come to you, so you don’t have to go back and pick them up manually. While not necessary to finish the game, it definitely makes life easier and smoother—and it pleases the cursed chickens!
