A longstanding multiplayer game that’s been active for nearly ten years is coming to an end. A recent update sheds light on what lies ahead for the game.
In a surprising announcement, Bungie revealed in their latest blog post that development on Destiny 2, their popular multiplayer RPG, is concluding. The company shared that their next scheduled update, set for June 9, 2026, will be the final live-service content release for Destiny 2. Bungie expressed that their focus is shifting toward future projects, which played a significant role in this decision.
“While our passion for Destiny 2 remains strong, it’s clear that after The Final Shape, it’s time for our shared worlds and Destiny itself to evolve beyond Destiny 2,” the blog explained. “As we look toward a new chapter for Bungie, we’ll start developing our next games. With that in mind, on June 9, 2026, we will deploy the last live-service update for Destiny 2 to kick off this new journey for our studio.”
“For nearly twelve years, we’ve had the honor and joy of exploring the Destiny universe with you. Through all the highs and lows, surprises and victories, building Destiny alongside our players has been an incredible privilege. While…” — Destiny 2 (@DestinyTheGame), May 21, 2026
This marks the end of an era for one of the most enduring titles of this generation. Despite a decline in player numbers over the years, Destiny 2 maintained a highly dedicated community. Bungie didn’t specify what’s next for the franchise, leaving room for speculation about a potential Destiny 3—though no official plans have been announced.
Currently, the only other active game from Bungie is Marathon, an extraction shooter released earlier this year.
For dedicated fans, the final Destiny 2 update will be significant. Bungie detailed numerous changes, including bringing back the in-game director, new missions that will conclude certain storylines and character arcs, adjustments to weapons and classes, and revamped methods for purchasing cosmetic items. A complete list of updates is available on Bungie’s official blog.
Destiny launched in 2014 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Its sequel, Destiny 2, debuted in 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Since then, Bungie has consistently rolled out annual content expansions, keeping the game fresh for its community.
