In Palia, you’ll spend a lot of time walking around because the maps are quite large, and traveling between different regions takes some time. That all changes once you get a horse, but how do you find your own noble steed?
Here’s how to get your first horse, and what you can do to obtain even more beautiful ponies for your account. Whether you prefer a regal, thoroughbred look or a mystical flaming horse that resembles a phoenix, we’ll guide you to your perfect horse.
How to Unlock Horses
Once you reach the Royal Highlands, head down the path from Lochland Dock to the Lonely Glen. In the top left corner of the I6 area, you’ll see Hassian standing next to a horse trapped in amber.
Use your pickaxe to free the horse, then look around for Dawnspur Lilies nearby. You’ll need to gather three of these golden flowers and bring them to the horse.
When you approach, the horse will eat the flowers and become energized. Hassian will then challenge you to try riding your new horse. To do that, open your inventory and go to the tools menu — specifically the saddle icon. Select your new horse as your mount to start riding.
Important: You don’t need to be current with the main story to unlock horses, so feel free to get your mount as soon as you can!
How to Ride Your Horse
After unlocking your horse, exit the tool menu and open the tool wheel. Your horse will appear at the bottom just like any other tool. When you select it, your horse will materialize beneath you, and you’re all set to ride.
Horses follow the game’s default movement keys, and the camera switches to follow your horse. You can change these controls in the settings if needed. To make your horse move faster, hold down the forward key. Tapping the backward key will slow your horse gradually, or holding it down will bring your horse to a stop.
Horses also have a stamina bar that limits how long they can run. When stamina runs out, travel becomes slower. To restore stamina, steer your horse into glowing gold orbs on the road — these will top up your horse’s energy, allowing you to keep running without stopping.
How to Breed Horses
Once you’ve unlocked horses in the Royal Highlands, you can find your new steed at the barn. If there’s no space in the stable, you’ll need to make room and retrieve a horse from the retirement section.
You can breed horses as you upgrade your ranching skill, which unlocks the ability to breed different types. While you can mix traits from various breeds, crossbreeding different horse types isn’t possible. For example, a Dawnspur can only breed with another Dawnspur, and not with a Phoenixfire or Akwindu type.
Can You Ride the Horses You Breed?
Yes, you can ride the horses you breed at your barn. However, riding certain special horses — like Phoenixfire or Akwindu breeds — requires a special license. These licenses must be purchased with Palia Coins, which you can buy with real money. There are bundles available to help you get started, and each breed needs its own license for riding.
That said, all standard Dawnspur horses you breed can be ridden without a special license. You just need to progress through Binnie’s quests in the Royal Highlands to unlock this feature fully.
Tip: Even if you can’t ride Phoenixfire or Akwindu horses without a license yet, you can still breed them in hopes of getting the perfect mount before deciding to purchase a license.
