The Dark Pictures Anthology games are known for offering many ways to either help or harm the group of friends during supernatural adventures. Directive 8020 is no exception, with numerous opportunities for your characters to be killed.
If you want to achieve the best ending and keep everyone alive, you must stay alert throughout the game and make careful choices. There are eight characters whose lives depend on your decisions. Here’s how to keep them all safe.
There are 44 possible deaths in Directive 8020. Some are fixed and cannot be changed, but most crew members’ fates can be influenced. Episodes Two: Best Laid Plans and Four: Dragnet do not feature character deaths, so they are not included here.

### The shortest way to save everyone
If you’re aiming for a quick route to keep all characters alive, focus on key decisions early on:
– Ensure Cernan escapes during the chase with Williams in episode three. It’s easier to prevent their capture than to risk their death.
– Get Stafford to his seat during the crash of the Cassiopeia in episode three. His death here can lead to failures later.
– Like Cernan, Eisele has an early flash-forward scene. Turn on the incinerator in Waste Management to keep her safe, as getting caught there makes her vulnerable.
– Save Mitchell from the fire in episode five or let the ship’s fire suppression system do it for you by keeping it online.
– During episode six, when Stafford aims at Williams, do not shoot him if your goal is to save everyone.
– When the crew scans in Bridge Ops, choose whether to shoot Williams or the impostor Eisele carefully to avoid unnecessary casualties.
– In episode seven, when the team is separated, use the communication device to find the real Anders. Choose the right path and locate her in the Stalactite scene before returning to the ship.
– Throughout episode eight, pass all Quick-Time Events (QTEs). Missing these can result in up to 23 deaths during escape sequences.
– When Williams discusses the situation, bring him along when you leave, even if tempted otherwise.
– Help Stafford during his fall and succeed in the QTEs to save him; failing here results in his death.
– During the escape, pass every QTE to avoid disasters like tentacles or fireballs killing your crew.
Remember, decisions made in earlier episodes can influence later outcomes. Playing through the game multiple times allows you to explore different choices, but for the first attempt, it’s best to focus on saving everyone. Unlocked deaths become available once seen on a saved file.

### Episode One: Little Star
In episode one, characters Carter and Simms are at risk. During the Disaster scene, Simms trips into space; if you fail to catch her, she dies. Later, when Carter flees from a monster that looks like Simms, getting caught during the chase results in his death.
—
### Episode Three: The Sample
In this episode, Cernan must hide from Williams. It’s best to let Cernan escape unchecked to gain advantage later. The crew’s only death here is Stafford’s, happening during the crash. To survive, stay seated and fasten your seatbelt. Reboot the computer to disable fire control if you’ve turned off the landing systems earlier and pass the QTEs to survive the crash.
Failing to get Stafford to his seat in time will result in his death.

### Episode Five: Mr. Williams
Key moments include the “Under Pressure” scene, where choices from episode two influence outcomes. Decide whether to save Anders or Mitchell. To keep both alive, ensure the Fire Control system is active or save Mitchell if you turned it off. Choosing the wrong options can cause Mitchell’s death, blocking access to some future save points.
—
### Episode Six: Hostile Takeover
In the hydroponics scene, your remaining crew members’ doubles might be present. Safely reaching the ladder here triggers the “Escaped” node. Getting caught results in the death of either Eisele or Cernan. Later, during the decision on whether or not to shoot Williams, choosing not to shoot is key for saving everyone. To do that, you must have fled Williams in a prior episode.
When split up, escaping the monster in the scene called “The Hunt” by avoiding detection keeps both Cernan and Eisele alive. If you get caught or fail to hide, they can die.
—
### Episode Seven: Revelation
In this scene, find the real Anders by choosing the right path at the fork. During the “Pod Room,” stay hidden from the monster to save crew members. In “Geoscience,” stealth is essential, and escaping from the monster in “The Hunt” preserves Cernan and Anders.
Later, during the “Scanner” scene, determine who is human by testing and shooting the impostor or abstaining if unsure. The real Eisele is the newcomer if you test them. Failing or not testing can lead to Eisele or Cernan’s death.
—
### Episode Eight: Come True
This final chapter has over half of the 44 possible deaths, emphasizing the need to excel at QTEs. Survive all moments, especially in escape scenes, by passing every quick-time prompt.
Bring Williams along if he’s alive, despite objections, to help in escape sequences. Successfully passing scenes like “Return of the Beast” and “Into the Reactor” keeps everyone safe. Failures in QTEs here—particularly during critical moments like sealing exits or detonation—can cause character deaths and end the game prematurely.
If all choices are made wisely, the ending will feature every crew member surviving the ordeal.
