Fast travel in Romestead isn’t available right from the start—you’ll have to earn it. The game revolves around using altar teleportation, a skill that lets you teleport between locations once you’ve set it up properly.
The good news is that setting it up is simpler than it might seem at first. With some knowledge, you can create a basic outpost that has only a single upgraded altar, staffed by just one person, dedicated to fast travel. This guide will explain how to unlock the Altar Teleport skill and how to build the upgraded Altar needed to use it.
Romestead is currently in Early Access, so details may change as development continues.
How to Unlock Altar Teleportation
Altar Teleport is a Rank 2 skill located in the Mercury skill tree. It costs two Worship points to unlock. But before you can see it as an option, you must first complete the Giant Owl quest. Finishing this quest unlocks both the Carpenter building type and the ability to upgrade your Altar to Level 2—both necessary for fast travel.
After completing the Giant Owl quest and earning two Worship points, go to the Mercury skill tree and select Altar Teleport. To unlock this, you’ll need to make enough offerings to Hermes.
Once you upgrade your Altar, you’ll be able to access the Teleport button, which allows you to instantly travel to any other upgraded Altar you’ve placed.
How to Build a Level 2 Altar
A Level 2 Altar is the minimum required to use the Altar Teleport skill. You don’t need a full settlement to get one—just a small, basic outpost with these four structures:
- A Workbench—needed to establish a settlement flag and start a new town.
- A Material Storage.
- A Carpenter’s Workshop.
- An Altar.
With these structures in place, you only need to gather some accessible trees and rocks nearby, which is enough to set up a reliable fast travel point.
Importantly, you don’t need to assign someone to work at the Carpenter’s Workshop. Having it built is enough to upgrade the Altar. This means you can set up a dedicated fast-travel outpost almost anywhere on the map without it affecting your main settlement’s workforce.
