A highly anticipated open-world game for PlayStation 5 has just been released, receiving a mix of enthusiastic and lukewarm reviews.
On OpenCritic, Crimson Desert launched with an overall score of 80, which is generally considered high. Nonetheless, the reviews have been quite polarized. Although 81% of critics recommend the game, the buzz surrounding Crimson Desert has caused some to view its score more critically.
Many reviewers praised the game’s vast open world and the extensive variety of activities it offers. Still, even the most favorable opinions pointed out issues with various mechanics and a narrative that doesn’t quite meet the game’s high expectations to drive the experience.
Mollie Taylor from PCGamer gave the game an 80, describing it as “relentlessly expansive and complex, which might frustrate some players but excite others. Crimson Desert is an intriguing journey, even if the destination isn’t always clear.”
Richard Wakeling of GameSpot rated it 7 out of 10 and mentioned, “While it might lack cohesion at times, blending elements of high fantasy, steampunk, and sci-fi in ways that feel chaotic, there’s nothing quite like it. Pearl Abyss’s boldness in embracing its eccentricity makes it a world worth exploring. Crimson Desert may not be perfect, but it’s a universe that captures the imagination.”
Tony Polanco of Tom’s Guide awarded the game 4 out of 5 stars, stating, “The story is fairly standard, and the start can be tough, but if you enjoy sprawling sandbox adventures, it’s a journey worth taking.” Conversely, James Billcliffe from VG247 gave it 3 out of 5, noting, “At launch, the most compelling parts of Crimson Desert are buried beneath layers of absurdity.”
Christian Bognar of DualShockers highly praised the game, giving it a 9.5 out of 10. He remarked, “This is one of the biggest games I’ve ever played, packed with high-quality content, complex puzzles, and a world so vast I haven’t seen everything even after 100 hours. While the story isn’t the strongest and some bosses feel unfair, these flaws don’t significantly diminish an already incredible experience. Crimson Desert stands out as one of the best open-world games available.”
